So if you have no liabilities with the bank and are not in company accommodation there should be no Retention Money? Or do they keep some back "just in case"?

I don't see why you would need to close your bank account before you leave. It is possible to have a bank account in Dubai (but not a cheque book) if you are not resident.

Not quite. You have to give one month's notice and there is a penalty of two months rent. So effectively you have to pay three months rent from when you give notice. Depending on how far below...
