Cool Guys, that's an unfortunate choice of words. The 787 Spitfire is not cool, it's fuming hot, that's the problem.

It is for now a fairly advanced plane that will one day be consigned to...

Actually, 31 May (a domestic flight) has been scheduled.

If I'm taking a Dreadliner, I'd prefer it to be June 31st.

Refusing to fly the Dreadliner

I guess they'd either be ignored or invited to give a presentation to flight safety management explaining what they know that the FAA doesn't.

The casing etc is largely for public perception. It will probably even be removed

This is becoming more and more like Boeing+FAA vs Public+NTSB.

With Boeing betting that the public don't care.

Double engine failure hours from land

It's understood we're talking about two engines failing due to independent causes.
There's a calculated probabilty that this will happen one day. It's not, as barit would like, a non-issue.
If it...

5 decades of experience taught us this is a total non-issue

The trans-oceanic two engines failure could happen tomorrow. We've just been fortunate so far.

we (at Boeing) were shown a graph of commercial aircraft production, Boeing vs Airbus

EEngr: at the same time Airbus management was showing staff the same chart. The message: less hiring & firing means better qualified, more experienced, workers and superior quality for the customer.

They put a hidden red nose on the Firebox.

I suggest we don't follow Boeing's choice of "battery containment box" or "battery enclosure" but call it what it is: FIRE BOX.

That gives them about four months.
