It seems that the general view is that renters shouldnt worry too much about the legal status of the engine, so long as it seems to run ok.

Perhaps you should be able to assume that, but, over the years, I've been offered aircraft for hire that have turned out to have had expired Annuals/checks, on condition, or just time expired...
