CHAMPAGNE or SAFETY .. or both..??
I will to travel HKG LHR HKG in June. My travel options are flexible enough to allow me to fly nonstop CX,VS or BA or go with Aeroflot via Moscow, Emirates via Dubai, Thai via Bangkok or Malaysian via KL.
Three Questions:
If I fly nonstop statistically am I safer ( lesser flight times and limited (barring unforseen circumstances) to two landings and two takeoffs) ?
Assuming I choose the alternative route(s) is my safety factor statistically equal among the four alternatives in terms of relative safety records or is the whole exercise a lottery in which I pay my money and take my chance ??
Aeroflot are offering amazing business class fares within my travel period...Am I trading champagne and comfort for safety ??

Don't think safety is so much of an issue now for Aeroflot. However I don't know what the comfort and service standards are in their business class but guess they may be no better than Economy Plus on BA etc.
As I can't recall a single accident on ANY of the carriers described on the routings you describe, the safety record on Hong Kong to Europe flights has to be 100% on the lot. So no history to give you any concern at all.
In that time I am however sure pax on that routing have been killed going to/from the airport by road, so that's the bit of the trip you should avoid.
Aviation is quite a professional discipline, you know

I just rode Business on Aeroflot from NY to Riga via Moscow and it was great!!!
New "sleeper seats" (almost a full recline) and excellent service...A/C was a B-767...

Hehehe...What an interesting question, I was expecting to see a question asking about the best onboard service.
Right, Im going to play this game. Heres my very patchy and totally made up opinion here...so please, no flaming!!!
Aeroflot are good now, but 10 years or so ago a flight from SVO to HKG crashed cos the captain let his son "play" with the control!!!
BA have always been known as a "safe" airline so that speaks for itself, but then there have also been questions regarding their maintenance in recent months, believe it is all sorted out now though.
Emirates have never had fatality BUT they have had a number of "incidents" of late including that A340 out of Jo'burg.
Cathay, well you never really hear anything negative about their safety record (or am i missing something? Please correct me if so) but they did sack a load of pilots for some bizarre reason which votes negatively in my book.
Malaysian are scaling back big time at the moment due to cash flow problems and they had a few safety concerns some time ago about their aircraft arriving into LHR from KUL with barely any fuel left in the tanks due to a cost saving initiative by management. Im sorry but safety should never be compromised for the sake of "economising"!!!!
Thai airways, well I really dont know enough about them to comment but I do know that I cant stand BKK airport!!! LOL!
Well, thats my little run down, make of it what you will. I personally would chose either BA or Cathay but hey, thats how my mind works...scary isnt it?

Well Cathay did have a very interesting windshear go-around in Hong Kong recently where the aircraft achieved some interesting attitudes before they realised nobody was actually flying it (autopilot was not engaged!).
And Virgin nearly went swimming in HKG in an A340 a few years ago.
Not that I'm singling those two airlines out, everybody's got skeletons in their cupboards.

Just as long as you don't go outside the terminal in Moscow, Dubai, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur, you should have a perfectly safe flight with any of the carriers mentioned. That's the danger zone.......................
