WANTED - Commercial Pilots to attend Emergency Training For Air Traffic Controllers
NATS Swanwick are looking for commercial pilots to come along to our Emergency Training Sessions once again.
Please find details below:
ART - ATCO Refresher Training
ART involves both classroom and practical simulator sessions; these sessions are greatly enhanced by the presence of a commercial pilot. ART takes place at our Corporate and Technical Centre (CTC) at Whiteley (approximately 3 miles from Swanwick). The session will commence 1300 for Area Control or 1400 for Terminal Control and finish at approximately 1900 hours.
There will be an opportunity to visit the Ops room at Swanwick before the ART session. Please advise if you would like to take up this opportunity and we will notify you of the necessary timings and arrangements accordingly.If you don’t wish to visit the Ops room at Swanwick, please arrive at the CTC Whiteley 20 minutes before the session is due to commence. You will be met at Reception by one of the ART facilitators.
STAC - Scenario Training for Aircrew and Controllers
STAC aims to improve communication between pilots and controllers. It is solely classroom based but uses some radar replays to enhance discussions; with controllers from Swanwick and other Aviation Professionals including pilots. A member of the Swanwick Training Team will facilitate mutually constructive conversations during a 0900-1430 day session. There will be an opportunity to visit the Ops room at the end of the session.
We are able to offer some mileage expenses (for ART and STAC), up to the maximum of 260 miles towards the cost of your journey to Swanwick. There will be an expenses form which should be completed on the day of the visit. The rate currently stands at 20p/petrol per mile, 18p/diesel per mile, 16p/LPG per mile and 18p/motorcycle per mile.

We will then send you confirmation together with details of the security arrangements and a map.Please feel free to forward this e-mail to any of your colleagues who may be interested in coming along to a session.

And will actually be in the UK late in November.

It’s a great day out and well worth the effort.
I stayed the whole day and first watched actual controllers on the live sector which included my base airfield, then a London sector for a while. We were able to observe and ask questions.
Then we had a session in a classroom with pilots and controllers discussing various scenarios and issues.
Then for the ART parts, we went into a simulator where pilots pretend to be an aircraft. I decided to take up headings 30° off what I was instructed. Those ATC guys and gals are very sharp! My “navigation problem” was picked up very quickly - while the controller was also vectoring 6 other aircraft out of London City.
Lastly, we watched the ATC folk in their simulator. They were working quite normally when they lost all their screens. They were very calm and reverted to procedural controlling.
Very impressive and well worth a visit. From my own experience I always knew UK controllers were good, but they are very very good.
