Apache Crash in Afghanistan (Video)

Reports are saying that both the ground crew and pilots are OK. Bloody lucky as, if you look at around 0:26, that looks mighty close to the ground crew! (though that could just be the perspective )

What a prat, guess density/pressure altitude caught him out in a pedal turn ( presume the ah64 is an anti clock rotor so that was not a " torque turn")
Impressed with the crash survivability

One should reduce Collective well into the maneuver...not at the bottom...and turning to the right would have been smarter as well.

But....by Gawd them Apaches are tough built things!

It looks like, at the end, he tried to fly away from impact but had lost tail rotor and so went into rotation on lift off.

Is that the way you see it?

Could have popped off a few rockets to make a crater to give enough height to recover it, obviously not a quick thinker.

Was the final impact into powder snow?

I suspect they will lock him up for that display and afterwards a dishonourable discharge at best.

The perils of showboating without proper practice and experience. No wind (at the surface, but who know what wind at the slight altitude he climbed to.
Be careful of wingovers from into wind to downwind!!

That's what I thought and commented, when first seeing this vid shortly before checking rotorheads, after f-book. Seems to me TR driveshaft or thereabouts gave in after such cracking and bending of the tail.

Maybe a bit of good old Ag training wouldn't have gone astray.

See, this is what happens when you let mechanics do ground runs without pilot supervision.

Two questions:
1) How often does flying like that occur normally without incident, regardless of whether it is good practice or not?

2) Did the turn into the sun affect the pilot's judgement? Is it guaranteed the visor was down?

A Demonstration of Mil Std 1290

The survivability of the crew is a tribute to the AH-64 and Mil Std 1290 of which it was designed.

Ah....the 64 Dollar (40.5 Pound Sterling) question....."How does one learn to do this safely.... without practice?"

Normally without a 64 million dollar machine that is not loaded with explodeables....

Looks very similar to the one done in S Africa with an Aloete 3 which was completely over loaded - mis-calculation on the figures when it was loaded...!

Just goes to prove my rule of thumb.... Don't around when there is a camera rolling....

Wing-over turn ending downwind is no no, (just like the in the Jet-box in Germany did and nearly crashed...) and full left pedal in the turn
Did he mange to give those troops on the ground a real haircut or did they escape unharmed?
Probably the best waste of taxpayer’s money caught on film since the "Black Hawk tree trimmer"
