The important bit within the JAR FCL bit you've copied is 'ATLEAST five hours'.

There is no guarantee that after the minimum five hour input you'd be up to the required standard. No doubt some are, but just as equally some won't be

That's more than likely what Helimutt was getting at

ICAO IR(H) to JAR ME IR(H)

LASORS 2008 Section E2, IR Conversion Requirements states:

"Holders of an ICAO SE IR(H) wishing to obtain a JAR-FCL ME IR(H) will be required to complete a minimum of 15 hours SE IR flight instruction, of which 5 hours may be in a FNPT I or 10 hours in a FNPT II or Flight Simulator. In addition, applicants must hold a multi-engine type rating, complete at least 5 hours instruction in instrument flying in multi-engine helicopters, of which 3 hours may be in a flight simulator or FNPT II, and pass a ME IR Skill Test. Alternatively, applicants shall complete 15 hours ME IR flight instruction and pass a ME IR Skill Test in a multi-engine helicopter (no instructional time will be allowed in a FNPT or Flight Simulator)."

Does this imply that the previous requirement to have a multi engine type rating before starting instrument training has been dropped?

I would appreciate everybodys' input.

Now that is a confusing paragraph!

I take it to mean:-

a. You must hold the ME rating first either way.

b. JAR-FCL Training alternatives are:

i) 15 hours SE IR (inc. up to 5/10 hrs sim.) plus 5 hours ME IR (inc. up to 3 hrs sim.), plus ME IR Skill Test, or
ii) 15 hours ME IR (no sim.) plus ME IR Skill Test.

I think the "Alternatively" is meant to differentiate between i) & ii), the hours/sim. options, not holding the ME rating.

trust me, I asked the very question from the CAA and there is no getting away from needing the ME type rating before doing the IR (or at least a course completion certificate for the type rating course.

Hope that helps.

I kept checking this thread. One thing that slips to my mind. I know that JAA IR (H) skills test has to be done in JAA airspace. BUT,

Why don't Bristows in Tittusville get AS365 for some type ratings? Would be feasible? I presume some IR training could be done as well.
From what I've read on PPRuNe on FW training in the US, looks to me that they do so.
Not sure how much non-type rating flying their B206 does.

That would make things easier for type rating conversion and would satisfy JAA multi engine type rating requirements.

Hope I won't need JAA IR(H) anytime soon even when CPL eventually :-)

Bond IR prices

Does anyone knows about what prices are we talking in Bond to do the IR course?

I already have the ec135 rating, 10 hours IR simulated (hughes 300) and 9 hours of flight simulator.

thank you folks

AS365s would be far too expensive. I believe Bristow Academy are recruiting in Norwich, England for the addition of 1 or more AS355s to supplement (replace?) the 206.

I believe Bristow Academy are currently recruiting in Norwich, England in anticipation of the addition of 1 or more AS355s to supplement but probably replace their 19,000 hour 206 G-AVII in their excellent IR program.

My question is what would you do and what is a better way to spend your money, for a full JAA IR rating course.

Bond has the multi engine ec135 course which cost a lot of money. You will do a lot of training on a full motion sim which can safe time in comparison to a real helicopter. (is it easy to load different wind conditions etc, and you can practice more on the things you find hard)

And bristows has the single engine bell course which is slightly cheaper, here you fly more in a real helicopter instead of a sim.

Is it just personal which one you choose or has one a big advantage over the other?

If you now for example go to CHC and two exactly the same persons apply for a job and one had a bond IR paper and the other one a bristows.

Do you think it would matter, or not? (I know bristow will get a multi engine in the future as well)

Hopefully someone can give me usefull information about it

Just a thinking out loud, but surely an instrument rating would be more affordable in the UK, if the Sim time was more reasonabley priced?
Two companies I looked at, charge between £250 and £365 per hour for sim time. Does it really cost that much to run (purchase + instructor + running costs)??

Just a thought

£260 - £365 works out more reasonably than in the order of £1000 for a twin.

Just got it.

First time I have made a post but I have to tell someone. I have just passed my single pilot instrument rating at Severn Aviation at Gloucester airport with the hope of going to the North Sea ASAP. I noticed that no one has made any reference to these guys who are churning out first time passes (two at the same time I passed) on a regular basis. I can only suggest that if you are looking to train for an IR you give them a call. Great facilities and sim.100% professional and no sitting about waiting for instructors. Good tea room as well.

Started from zero for the IR but with a UK CPL. If you need costs call Mark or the formidable Annette who looks after the boys at Severn on + 44 1452 716862.
CHCoffshore - David and Robin did my training. Mark did my 170A. I think he's recently moved out of his car, the sim room is warmer.
