American aviation customs.....
Although I did most of my training in the UK, I do visit - and fly a rental to see my family in the US. No doubt many British pilots visit and fly in the US.
They celebrate Thanksgiving over there on this coming Thursday. During the Annual Turkey Trot Festival in Yellville, Arkansas, the following custom came to the attention of the FAA; namely, live Turkeys are thrown out of planes.
Said the FAA spokesperson, in an email to Huffpost, "The FAA can't stop people from throwing live turkeys out of planes....Federal Regulations do not specifically prohibit dropping live animals from aircraft. This does not mean we endorse the practice...."

While we traditionally eat turkey on Thanksgiving, the Yellville Turkey Trot is in October. Their tradition of tossing turkeys from planes predates WKRP by about 10 years.

FAR §91.15 Dropping objects.
No pilot in command of a civil aircraft may allow any object to be dropped from that aircraft in flight that creates a hazard to persons or property. However, this section does not prohibit the dropping of any object if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property.
Be warned, @DP: it seems to be "not done" on this forum, and in other predominantly Brits environments, to point out typing and spelling errors. Ask me how I know!
