NOTAM CTA Activated

Hi - if a NOTAM CTA is activated (e.g. EGHI CTA, see level - FL55) do I need permission to enter? I want to land at Sandown on the Isle of Wight.

I'm struggling to find anything online about CTA's, and am a bit rusty these days on this kind of thing.

I presume you mean 'sea level' not 'see level' in which case it would not be a CTA as these start at a defined lower limit amsl to a defined upper limit; it's CTRs which start at the surface. For any CTR or CTA they would normally be at least Class D airspace so you would need permission to enter however if they were Class E you only need permission if you are IFR.
Can you post the ref of the NOTAM so we can all see what you mean?

Gosh, you ARE rusty. What on earth has the EGHI CTA got to do with landing at Sandown?

Not sure where you are getting NOTAMs but if you use Skydemon light, it can show you where a NOTAM is on the map, and you'll see Sandown is not in the EGHI CTA. If you're using the NATS website, get Skydemon urgently. Light version is free.

PS Talkdownman I suspect the OP might be using a text route planner e.g. NATS website which is flagging this up as it's within 5 or 10 nm of track.

The airspace is permanent, the NOTAM refers to changes in airfield operating hours (& therefore ATS.) The CTR & CTA limits are as marked on the chart, your planned route remains outside of both. The 23nm radius circle does not mark the extent of airspace.

Original Poster, you have just come across the one 'downfall' of Sky Demon I have to date found.
The 'system' draws a circle based on Lat/Long, or in this case to encompass the CTR/CTA, which seemingly includes other, non relevant airspace.
Look closely at limits of said CTR/CTA on Sky Demon, or dare I say it, on paper chart, to see which airspace it refers to.

It's not Sky Demon per se, it's the original NOTAM which specifies the 23nm circle. All it means is that the NOTAM may be of interest to someone within that radius.

I use the NATS site for NOTAMs. There you can ask for a 'point' brief eg an airfield and YOU specify the radius of the circle within which you need to know of NOTAMs. In this case I would suggest a 5nm radius wold have been adequate and would not have included the Solent regulated airspace details.

It would be really great if there could be some kind of agreed formatting for defining the coordinates of the actual NOTAM'd space in the NOTAM free text, since then it would be possible to automatically plot the true NOTAM polygon (like we do for Red Arrows transits), but sadly it is not so.


The only consistently formatted part of a NOTAM is the "Q line" which gives a centre-point, radius and a code for the type of NOTAM it is - there is no guarantees that a promulgator will enter the right information into this Q line of course, but at least it is always formatted correctly!

Solent CTA is only extended M-F 2145-2200 and Sun 2115-2200. Active until 17 Jun 17. Prob not too much GA going to be affected by this?
