Aviation things to do in Hawaii
Guys
Anyone got any pointers or recommend any Aviation related stuff over in the land of Hawaii. I hear the flying over there is quite spectacular.
Scenic Flights? Out of HNL? Even stuff on the ground? Not looking at flying myself this holiday someone else can do it this time round!
Booked a few caravan flights around the islands already on Mokulele Airlines.

Rather than just going on a helicopter tour, go and have a lesson with Mauna Loa Helicopter School. Not only do you get a great view of the local area but you also get to fly a helicopter with the doors off and add (perhaps) a new experience to your logbook. Take an R44 and then you can take someone else along for the ride; they'll definitely enjoy the views of Pearl Harbor as you make your way back to base :-)
I have no interest in Mauna Loa Helicopters other than having had helicopter flying lessons with them and being a happy customer.

Many years ago I did a C172 flight out of Hilo, after taking a low cost commercial flight over to the Big Island. The flight around the volcanoes and over the lava flow where it meets the ocean ranks as one of the best I've done. I didn't have much time, so just phoned ahead, presented at one of the local flying schools, teamed up with one of their CPLs/instructors, and headed off for an hour and a half. Well worth the effort.

Forget the flying. (no not really, do this as well) Go to the bottom of the Pacific in a submarine (a bit scary) from Waikiki. I did it a couple of years ago and saw a few aircraft down there, not surprising with Pearl Harbour not far off.
I looked to do a flight with the gliding club on Ohahu a few years ago, decided not to as it was going to be a long hot & sweaty ride on a bus without air conditioning, followed by another ride to the site - all for an expensive ride in a Schweizer (2-33?) glider.
Instead Mrs R2 & I flew to Maui (30 mins on a 717 IIRC) where I hired a beautiful Archer from Maui Aviators with an instructor (as a tour guide & RT expert) & had the most memorable flight of my 40 years as a puddle jumper pilot round 4 islands. Too much to tell you what we did / saw in those 2 wonderful hours - PM me if you want. I always wear a huge smile when I think of that flight

In my day, there was a little airline at Honolulu called Royal Hawaiian Air Service which operated a fleet of Cessna 401s. I did one trip from Honolulu to Kalaupapa on Molokai and from there we went low level (just out to sea) along the north coast heading east. The scenery is stunning and some of the waterfalls are spectacular. We landed on an airstrip in the middle of a cane field at Kaanapali Beach on Maui. (I think they have a proper airfield now). Anyway, if you can find someone to take you along that coast it is well worth doing.
And just to brighten up a winter's day, here is a shot of RHAS Cessna 401 N770Q (with the Family Controller posing in the foreground) parked in front of the terminal building at Kaanapali Beach, Maui. There was a tiny bar upstairs and they claimed it was the smallest terminal in the world. (I would dispute that; before we all get carried away).

Hi,
I'd recommend hiring a plane from a local flying club; I've done this a number of times on Hawai'i, Maui and Kauai - all have been incredible experiences with breathtaking scenery.
Of course you'd have to go for a checkout first, but if you don't want to be too hands-on, I'd suggest just renting the plane with an instructor - they've got the local knowledge and usually quite happy to give you a tour of the sites...inter-island flights are pretty cool too (watch out for the weather!) you can as much or as little flying as you'd like.
You could even take passengers if you rented a big enough airplane - I took my folks! PM me if you'd like any recommendations.
Enjoy!
