Just one small point: In the real world no one uses hectopascal thingies !
I believe the UK (except Hampshire apparantly) finally gave up its resistance, and joined the rest of europe, and most of the world by adopting the Hectopascal thingeys as the standard a couple of years ago.

That's not what I wrote - Oh pedantic one from God's own county. I commented that no one uses 'thingies'. Check it out as they say !

I won't comment that you'll never hear it but, it'll be rare.

Good Lord, I've just noticed that MJ is a Yorkshireman. Apologies sir, I may have spoken to you in the past as if you were an ordinary Englishman. As Sir Cecil Rhodes once said, 'To be born a Yorkshireman is to win first prize in the lottery of life.'

Up here in 'God's Own County' we use nothing but 'Thingeys'. I cant remember the last time I heard the 'M word'

Maybe it's just a southern thing.

Apologies sir, I may have spoken to you in the past as if you were an ordinary Englishman.
Think nothing of it old chap. We are well known for our generosity and forgiving nature.

Ps. You're right CK, it wasn't what you said.

I hesitate to correct such an excellent comment but, I don't think it was Cecil Rhodes. Somehow the name Geoffrey Boycott - who ever he is is - keeps creeping unbidden into what passes for my brain.

I don't go too far these days but, still fly the length and breadth of this country and have heard 'thingies' referred to just once !

Both QFE and QNH being given as just the number without reference to either 'thingies' or millibars.

I thought once you reached a thousand thingies no-one any longer cared what they were. Apparently when there are 999 of them or less there's huge ambiguity and everyone needs to know that you weren't talking millibars after all.

999 or less makes no difference. Millibars and hectothingies are the same.

To my admittedly jaundiced ear, hectopascals sounds like pretentious twaddle.

What a load of millibars some of you talk

Yorkshire? I can't find that on my half-mil chart 2171CD.

Last time I checked, Sheffield was still in Yorkshire - and Sheffield is most certainly on 2171CD

I guess you must only fly when the weather is nice then, and the 'thingies' well over 1000!

Hope i'm not being too pedantic!

Ah, I was just twisting Rhodes' original comment a bit. Wouldn't be surprised if old Geoffers hadn't done the same at some time; pure coincidence though. The original comment was

'Remember that you are an Englishman, and have consequently won first prize in the lottery of life.'

Capt Kremmen,

I think what worrab was getting at is that if ATC tells an American pilot that the setting is 999, he might set 29.99", which makes a lot of difference!

Slightly over 500' in fact.

India four two

I just knew that someone would throw inches into the mix ! If our putative American friend wants that I'm sure he'll get it.

I do fly 'only when the weather is nice' - I'm old, not bold.

thing

Of course you are right. It was Rhodes. I mentioned Boycott because it sounded just like something he would have said. Besides, he must be the world's most famous Yorkshireman.

Mach Jump

"..well known for our generosity.." I was having breakfast, served by the still delectable Mrs. Kremmen and I almost choked on my wheatiebangs when I read that. In fact I reached for my word enhancer (magnifying glass) to check that I hadn't misread.

I know that all the English are really Danes and tighter than a matelot in Portsmouth on a Saturday night but, really, Yorkshiremen - generous? You lot are Danes with knobs on.

Sadly I'm not that well travelled. Simply that at 1000 HPa/mb or above the pressure is given as a unitless number. Below 1000 the unit is given as well. I suspect that the reason for this is exactly as you say.

You are right. The reason is to avoid confusion between 'Thingeys' and Inches of Mercury below 1000 'Thingeys'

Gawd's sake ! Who are you all kidding ? I'm older than Methuselah's grandfather and I haven't heard inches mentioned ever - even by Yanks.

My wife might occasionally make a disgruntled reference but, I don't know to what she refers.

Well you know what the definition of a Yorkshireman is surely?

A Scotsman with all the generosity knocked out of him.

I proudly drink tea out of a pint pot mug with the motto 'See all, hear all, say nowt. Eat all, sup all, pay nowt. And if tha ever does owt for nowt, do it for thi sen' emblazened across it.

That's why we are the greatest people on God's fair earth. Any wish to denigrate Yorkshire is merely the politics of envy; and we look upon such attempted barbs with the patience of a father with a wayward son. We know it must be awful being second best so try our patience as you will, we will still love you.
