Heathrow dominates London’s air traffic and the two companies have a quasi-monopoly. They are extracting large rents. This is how monopolists behave, the more so when overseen by a weak regulator. Most importantly, a half-decent level of passenger service would be counter-productive because it would undercut the case for that third runway.

The delay on the BA service to Rome from Terminal 5 was only a couple of hours (something to do with the weather, though, to my eyes, the sky was cloudless and the sun shining).

May as well stop reading at that point.

I recollect, when flying the Highlands & Islands services in Viscounts, that we had few complaints from passengers re weather engendered delays. Most of them were, were related to or knew crofters, farmers or fishermen and were familiar with the limitations which weather can place upon operations.

1. I think they're trying to say: quasi-duopoly.
2. Improving customer service would reduce the demand for the 3rd runway? Wow! Lucky it's that simple.
