Response to pil00t question: So, how long can Estonian air maintain operations with losses like that?

Estonian Air in tail spin

Jul 08, 2009
By Ashley Brettell

NOSEDIVE: The Estonian national air carrier saw its financial earnings plummet, leading to speculation about whether it can keep its head above water.

TALLINN - The Estonian national air carrier is fighting for survival after announcing that its losses in 2008 had trebled. The financial results for 2008 revealed a loss of 171 million kroons (10.9 million euros), despite sales revenue rising by 6 percent to 1.46 billion kroons. This was over three times worse than the 52 million kroon loss incurred in 2007.

Estonian Air can’t work with loss for long, but if Estonian Air would disappear then the number of flights from Tallinn would go down by half, Andrus Aljas, the Estonian Air CEO told Postimees, ERR News reports.

“The company can’t work in loss for a long time. If Estonian Air isn’t able to e lucrative then there’s doubt whether this company is needed on the market,” Aljas said.
“If Estonian Air disappears then half of direct routes with Tallinn will disappear. Last year global trends were working against is, this year will be difficult as well, but we get back on our feet as soon as the situation improves,” Aljas said.

Rumors of new pilots getting hierd

There is some rumors going around that BT are accepting some new pilots in august, and what I heard was that this pilots will be taken from som holding pool. Has anybody that already is accepted heard anything?
Would be good news for us all if this rumor is true!! I'm flying on the F-50, and I can tell you that you all are welcome to come over to Riga and take some of my monthly duty time, witch is close to the limit each month

Hope to see some new faces soon!

Airbaltics future under question

RIX-BT,

My appologies for posting that last news that contained incorrect info about AB-s result, the correct info is that Air Baltics loss was actually bigger.

balticbusinessnews.com - airBaltic?s official result: Loss of more than EEK 600 mln
balticbusinessnews.com - Auditor: airBaltic?s future under question

And for the argument before, I was not saying Estonian Air is in top shape, quite opposite really, but Air Baltic does everything they can to make Estonian Airs situation even worse: dumping prices in Estonia and same time enyoing low taxes at RIX.
Sad thing is that Estonian goverment will give loan to Latvia which in the long run might be part of the money that Latvian goverment will give to Air Baltic in order to save it.

PS. Im not Estonian Airs pilot, though i know some employees there.

Don't be afraid about AB results-future will show...

Explanation: Just look back and check info about estonian meat products producer "Rakvere"-situation was the same in competition with Latvian company "Riga butcher". Currently "Rakvere" is big and strong. It is only business!

And We are returning back to information from World news services (Not only from estonian news services):

From what I hear there are some Fokker 50 FO's starting the ground course in Spetember, no news on the 737 FO's, but with the Dash comming, they will only be replacing those that leave. One word of advice, do not come to AB, and expect to comute home on your days off!!

Thanks for your information WMB, I still waiting. Here, in Spain, the situation is difficult, specially for low experienced pilots, so we know that we have to leave and work outside for at least 5-10 years just to have a chance and come back, it´s in our job.

Thumbs up Air Baltic vacancies.

Rumours say they need 50 F/O during 2010.
On the vacancies page they're now asking for Pilots to send in CV.

Seems like this is a positive trend for someone who really want to get a lot of duty time next year.

Last year a lot of pilots were put in holding pool when air baltic recruited. Is there anyone who has gotten an offer since? Anyone who has heard anything now? Question is, will one have to go through the recruitment process once more if invited for an interview?

I got a phone call from them one sunny friday on december to start groundschool on next monday. As I had been approved and swimmed in holding pool since end of 2008 but got flying job in between, so i had to decline due to current bond. Also I heard that they had recruited in late 2009 typerated pilots for 737. Anyone know about the new Dashes? Are the first ready for delivery?
