41 Sqn Association

41 Sqn RAF will celebrate its centenary anniversary in July this year. In line with the celebrations, past and present members with the permission of the current OC 41 Sqn based at RAF Coningsby, are engaged in setting up the 41 Sqn Association.

There will be various formal celebrations in July and the Association is being set up to facilitate contact and communication between present and past members as well as being a focal point for the history of the Sqn.

There have been attempts in the past to establish a 41 Sqn Association and we are aware of these attempts. We are also aware of other associations connected with 41 Sqn such as 41 Sqn Retro. We are therefore reaching out to those groups to establish Association links.

If you are interested in joining the Association and served at any time on the Sqn, please contact us through the following website:

41 Squadron | Seek and Destroy

In time, this website will come under the administration of the 41 Sqn Association.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

41 Sqn Association Secretary

2016 marks the centenary year of No. 41 Squadron. It is a proud milestone for the Squadron and an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our past, but most importantly the people who made the Squadron what it was through the years.

OC 41 has invited families of current and past 41 Squadron personnel to meet, socialise, join the Squadron Association and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have served on the unit. The main centenary events will be held at RAF Coningsby in July.

On Thursday 14 July 2016 at 1400 we will hold our formal Centenary parade. Should you prefer a more relaxed setting, on Friday 22 July 2016, we will have an Open Day, commencing at 0930, where you can view 41 Squadron in our current guise as the Test and Evaluation unit for Tornado and Typhoon. Centenary details are published on www.XLI100.com, where you will also find a tab for association information.

Our Association membership is open to those who have themselves served on 41 or who have a direct family connection to the squadron. The membership fee is £20.00 for 5 years and details of how to make payment to the treasurer will be promulgated at a later date.

Additionally, if you are on LinkedIn you can find an association group under "No 41 Squadron Association”.

Should you have any further questions, then please don't hesitate to get in touch.

The Squadron Centenary is rapidly approaching and it is not too late to RVSP to the Centenary events.

If you are interested in attending on the 14th or 21st of July then please contact the Association Secretary for more details: [email protected]

Thank you to those of you who have expressed interest in joining the Association. Our current direct membership stretches back to the Meteor era of 41 Sqn, with descendants and siblings of WW2 and WW1 veterans very well represented.

I was not a member of 41 Sqn, but was based at Biggin Hill 1953-1955 and photographed (in colour) one of 41's Meteor F8's and 41's Vampire T11 trainer, taken about 1954 I reckon, as 41 converted to Hunter F5's in 1955. See below:

Photos were taken from the old tower alongside the Bromley - Westerham Road.

Superb pictures. thank you very much for sharing.

My last trip into Biggin Hill was in a Hawk a number of years ago. Seem to recall ditching the planned transport when a convoy of WW2 vehicles offered us a lift into town!

Good times!

May I extend my thanks and gratitude to all those who came to the Centenary Parade and Gala Dinner. It was a privilege to meet with many of you and celebrate the Squadron Centenary in style!

The day was documented on the Squadron Facebook and Twitter pages by Sqn personnel as events unfolded:
https://goo.gl/N3rsmv - 41 Squadron Facebook page
https://goo.gl/h2TeXL - 41 Squadron Twitter page

As a backdrop to the dinner we displayed two videos, one to show the achievements of the 'Centenary Challenge' charity event and the other to tell the story of the Squadron's history. Links to view these videos and the Squadron picture archive have been made available to Association members via email.

The Centenary events are far from over. This weekend Mr Steve Brew, the Association Historian, will be launching his third book 'A Ruddy Awful Waste' at:
Dorrington Village Hall,
Torrington,
Shropshire.
Anyone who would like to attend the launch is more than welcome.
Sat, 16 July, 1345 arrival for a 1400 start.

The subject, Eric "Sawn Off" Lock, hales from Shropshire and has had a local ale named in his honour. It went down very well indeed at the Gala Dinner courtesy of Mr Mike Bradbury, a relative of Eric Lock and co-author of the book.

Next week will also be the Squadron Open Day on Friday 22nd from 0930. Another excellent opportunity to celebrate our past and meet one another.

Beyond this July there will be an Association led social event. Options are being considered by the committee at present and details of location and date will be promulgated in due course.

Seek & Destroy,

Merry Christmas

I am sure, like me, you have been looking forward to the Christmas break. As 2016 draws to a close it is a time to reflect on a very busy Centenary year for 41 Squadron. This year was notable for the ceremonial duties of July and the fantastic charity work of many individuals contributing to the Seek and Support fund. All this was done in the midst of a very active trials programme, which included an extensive deployment to the desert ranges of Naval Air Station China Lake in the United States of America. It was during the Centenary where our Association was formally launched by our President, Sir Chris Harper and since then it has been successful through the continued support and contributions from our membership, professional photographers, sister associations and authors on our online home: www.SeekAndDestroy.info. Your pictures, stories and anecdotes have given the website a rich content we can all be proud of - Thank you.

Through the Association we have already been able to bring together former colleagues and help find fill in missing family history in testament to the power of the internet and the goodwill of all involved.

Please continue to spread word of the Association and our first event at the RAF Club on the 21 Jan 17. Attendees need not be Association members, all those with an affiliation to the Squadron are very welcome to attend.

May I wish a safe, peaceful and very Happy Christmas to all
