Good on him, I wasn't aware of the award and it does not exactly sound very impressive, but looking it appears to be the none combat equivalent of the Bronze Star...

A brave man.
From the sounds of the description of the events I'd say he deserves even higher recognition. I am not fully au fait with US awards but looking through the link provided by Nutloose I wonder why he wasn't awarded something even more substantial.
Good on him regardless and a very well deserved award.

Airman's Medal ranks pretty high in the listing.
Amidst all the technicolour chest-fest it might not have the prominence of UK awards, but his peers would know what he earned.
Outstanding work, that man
Compare and contrast with the Bronze Star [Medal ] which, without the 'V' insignia, could be awarded to a jolly good chap in the Ops Room far away from the fighting for being 'meritorious'. There are bits of the US Awards system that really do my head in some times.

He'd have probably been CM'd if he was RAF for not completing the risk assessment paperwork, fitness test, IM passport, responsible for for information e-learning pack, human factors training, CCS, got 2* approval, and booked his own medical appointment 3 weeks in advance of his heroic efforts.
Well done that man.
Well done that man.
Third in precedence in Air Force medals; and a decoration rather than an award. Another bloke whose Mammy is going to give him a right bollocking for being silly when she has warned him about it before! Well done.
