It's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

In the first novel and radio series, a group of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings demand to learn the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything from the supercomputer, Deep Thought, specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be 42. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Question itself is unknown. When asked to produce The Ultimate Question, the computer says that it cannot; however, it can help to design an even more powerful computer (the Earth), that can. The programmers then embark on a further ten-million-year program to discover The Ultimate Question. This new computer will incorporate living beings in the "computational matrix", with the pan-dimensional creators assuming the form of mice. The process is hindered after eight million years by the unexpected arrival on Earth of the Golgafrinchans and then is ruined completely, five minutes before completion, when the Earth is destroyed by the Vogons to make way for a new Hyperspace Bypass. This is later revealed to have been a ruse: the Vogons had been hired to destroy the Earth by a consortium of psychiatrists, led by Gag Halfrunt, who feared for the loss of their careers when the meaning of life became known.[1]

Google is indeed your friend!

It could, of course, be the answer to the question, "How many more Typhoons will the RAF get?"

I would imagine that with a PPRuNe name of "Mostly Harmless", the OP will be fairly up to speed regarding Douglas Adams' literature.

42 is indeed correct.

That is half of the unit cost (in US$) currently quoted for each F35

I’ve been using another of Douglas Adams’ brilliant imaginations quite a lot recently, the Babel fish. I’ve been doing business with a Company that only writes to me in Italian, I translate it into English using Google’s Babel fish, deduce their meaning and convert my replies into Italian the same way. Just for fun I’ve been re-translating my replies back into English, the results have been curious to say the least. The headline for this sub-forum translated into German and back again becomes:

Military forum the flight crew A for the specialists, those the Nichtzivilist hardware fly and the Hinterstübchenjungen and - girls, without whom nothing would leave the ground. Army, navy and Air Forces of the world, everything welcome evenly here

Good innit?

The number of posts before someone complains that this has nothing to do with flying and so should be moved. They will also type that they have never read so much drivel and it’s pointless and the spelling and grandma is atrocious.

Oh AIDU has already started, ok just the first bit then.
Ill get me coat.

pish.... It's the number of the house/shop where I spent my early years:-

42, St. Osyth Road, Clacton -on - Sea, Essex.

and it doesn't get more pointless than that.

42 maybe the answer, but what was the question?
use it as an answer often. Must get out more often!

But then again there are 10 types of people in this world,
Those that understand logic, and those that don't

Reminiscent of the first "Monty Python" programme. A chap complained to the BBC that he was interested in circuses and interested in flying but he could not understand why the programme went right over his head...
