Leadership and Leading by example

We have a real moral dilemma it appears. What bothers me is that our leadership seems to be disconnected from the real problem and that problem IS leadership. Our leaders continually thump us over behaviors without the realization that with great leaders you will get great followers. Those followers may be come the next leaders.

This has been a problem for some time and I do not see it changing because our leaders won't change. Threats and intimidation have not worked but yet they continue with this ideology.

Our leaders must lead by example and set the tone. They must lead and at the same time teach. What does it say that as we have a moral issue, like the recent one being discussed, but at the same time have many cases over misbehaviors by the same people saying we must show restraint and WE must behave?

If you smoke in front of your kids and one day find your teenager smoking do you punish her/him? If you do you may have a bigger problem as people always see hypocrisy. If you educate and lead you will have great rewards, simple really. So why do we not have this?

I am really disappointed in our leadership and especially our newest leader. I thought we would have a new direction and it turns out it’s the same old rhetoric.

I am not sure which resent case or who you refer to Saturn, but I had my own recent example of "do as you told, not do as I do" when a manager on staff travel in First Class not only ask for an amenity kid, but also took the pajamas. And here my family is to scared to except an economy class hand out.

Leadership and Leading by example

Leadership and Leading by example……………………………….Hmm…………
CX has neither.

We have people running the company but that is not exactly leadership. We have Captain’s which run the operations on the aircraft but leadership is a stretch.

We have Managers in the company making examples of employees but never leading by example.

I respect the position but not always the person in it.

Leadership and Leading by example are gone by the way of the sword.

with great leaders you will get great followers. Those followers may be come the next leaders.
Swire does not want Great Leaders, what they want is Great Colonial Masters and that is what they have, from the top down unfortunately.

It’s all about money and money is power and power is ultimate.

They like to call them "commanders" but in the real world, commanders are responsible for the care and welfare and well-being and morale of their subordinates. In the real world, commanders ensure their subordinates are well fed, well rested, properly treated and properly respected.

Obviously this is not how the vast majority of "commanders" undertake their responsibilities. Our "commanders" seem to think that authority is all about selfish perks, without any responsibility for their subordinates conditions.

Real commanders in the real world ensure their subordinates receive the best possible treatment before taking their own rest, meals, time off, etc.

That's the difference between real leadership and seniority-based authority. A few know the difference, but most simply do not. Even Boy Scouts know that leaders eat and sleep only after their "troops" are taken care of....

Spot on Mr. Skillet. And the "seniority based authority" is also a joke around here, as we all know.

I've had the pleasure of working with some real leaders in my previous life, in an enviromemt a hundred times more demanding than ours. Yet some some of our colleagues, in both seats, think they're "commanding" an Apollo mission. It used to bother me but now I just smile. And the training culture within the organization just perpetuates the problem.

It's all about respect and it's missing in most areas of the operation, as events this week have highlighted.
