This was posted on !!!!!!!!!!!!!! on 30th Nov 2000.

When the two towers that make up the World Trade Center were built, they were designed to withstand the impact of the largest airliner of the day, the Boeing 707 Intercontinental. The Empire State Building survived a B-25 medium bomber crashing into it on very foggy day. It was during the weekend when most people weren't there, but still, 14 people died.

Anyone wanna bet that the World Trade Center could survive an 767-300 impact?

Could this have been posted by the perpetrators of this cowardly act?

Highly unlikely. He's probably just an ordinary kid. People say that kind of thing all the time. It's just coincidence.

I find it highly unlikely that a terrorist would pose as a young pilot and post something like this. 'twould bring attention to them wouldn't it?

If the young lad can even remember posting it, he's probably feeling a bit spooked right now.

Well remembered; however (not wishing to doubt you) the profile of the original poster does not look like a possible suspect, especially given the variety of postings made. I bet he is wishing the posting was never made; who knows, it could have been an inspiration for the idea. :(

Having reviewed that thread the responses would certainly add substantial info. to the perpetrators plans.

Probably not, but I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't had a knock at the door already.

Reading some of his many other posts he (MD80) does seem to have a heck of a lot of aviation knowledge.

Anyone forwarded this to the FBI?

Having read the new thread which quotes the original thread on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I'd say the young chap is in trouble. Several people there have reported him to the FBI. Poor sod!

At first sight this is an extraordinary prediction. However with hindsight it is not so unusual. The height of the towers and their proximity to several large airports made them prime targets. What I found extraordinary was the way the towers colapsed. However I have seen a number of structural engineers giving their expert opinion on television. It would appear that a 175 ton aircraft with some 45 tons of fuel on board and two large ignition sources (the engines) flown in to the towers would cause structural failure from the top down. Incredible.

Did anybody forwared Tom Clancy´s adress to the FBI, after he had published his book "Dept of honor"? Hopefully not!

The "Empire State building crash" was well through published, I saw an article in nearly every Guide about New York City. Furthermore, there is a very in deep description in some Aviation Disaster book.

Just heard with horror, that some of that sub individualls, who were suspected to be on board of the doomed flights and be the hijacker, lived for some time in Hamburg/Germany and went to university at the Technical Universtiy in Hamburg-Harburg/Germany.

Yep, after reading his other posts, I would have to agree that this guy's probably an enthusiastic kid with a great knowledge of aviation.

Funny, though that he hasn't posted for about 4 weeks.

This post he made on the 01.08.2001 raises a few eyebrows, however! Especially the last sentence!

CNN has an interview with one of the architects of the trade centre. He states that it was built to withstand an impact with the aircraft in use that time which had fewer seats and fuel...

Have any of the news channels (CNN, ABC, Sky, BBC?) picked up on this or even found him? I'm sure he's feeling pretty bad right now.

Like the story of being able to carry out the atrocities on Tuesday having only flown MS Flight Simulator on a home PC, I think this too is a red herring.

It is though a lesson that postings onto sites such as these may be read and noted by a lot more people than you may think and that they may be rediscovered long into the future.

Like the "face on Mars", it's just an optical illusion. Or faked...

J-Class
13th September 2001, 21:01
I don't think it's faked - I saw it on the live TV feed at the time. I do think it's the most incredible optical illusion, though.

Just as extraordinary is the cover of the new album by rappers The Coup (which I understand was withdrawn from sale today). As featured in October's Wired Magazine (pic).

Salon have an article about why the towers collapsed:
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2001/09/11/collapse_background/index.html
as do the BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/americas/newsid_1540000/1540044.stm .
Both articles seem to suggest that the planes were calculated to hit the building in such a way that it would collapse.

Yup I think a gentle knock on the door by a fully equipped SWAT team would be appropriate. Has MD-80 posted any other disaster scenarios ?

Sorry for your troubles all you USA people ..

you are not alone

It is truly frightening that this person kept on the subject, or relevant issues for so long.

Could pax fly/land a plane?
Would the WTC fall down if hit?

Referring directly to the aircraft as a bomb.

It seems the poor lad is either a prophet or one very unlucky soul.

Unfortunately..

Any information about how crew operate and how the aircraft operate is avaliable here through the camaraderie of the industry.
How else does one get to know aviation other than through communication such as these bulletin boards.

Frighteningly, we could have been chatting to or reading posts of those involved, or providing them with valuable information for a year or more. Or indeed providing them with ideas.

A million what if's and a tragic waste of life.

My fears are for every free person.
My sympathies to the US Citizens
My hopes for a brighter future

Maybe, maybe not, but on the technical question of designing the building to withstand the impact of a 707, I have thought about this, and my theory is that maybe the structural engineers assumed the possibility of that size of jet "happening" to crash into the tower at a speed associated with that altitude, say 280K - 300K IAS max. When I saw the horrible TV images of the jets smacking into the towers, they appeared to be flying at max speed - I'm a 757 driver and I reckon they were on or beyond the "barber's pole" on the ASI i.e very fast. With a limited knowledge of physics, but enough to appreciate the significance of velocity in the E=0.5mvsquared formula, I reckon the velocity was too high for the structure to withstand, insofaras the jet penetrated so far in that the subsequent explosion and contained intense heat, weakened the vital strength and the kinetic energy damage combined to break the Camel's back.

My thoughts at this time are with all those who are suffering as a result of this tragedy, and I mourn the loss of so many fellow human beings.

I strongly believe that it will be a testament to their lost lives that we stand firm in our efforts to erradicate this threat to our civilisation, and continue to live our lives with hope for our future and that of our children. 2 days ago, the pendulum swung towards the forces of evil, many have said that the world is a changed place. I believe the overwhelming strength of good versus evil will prevail, but we must work hard to achieve it, and stand firmly together.

hello all...

As everyone on earth, I watched those videos with shock and horror...
Concerning the fact that the towers withstood those incredible collisions, it is true that they were designed to resist the impact of an 707. And they did this beautifully : they barely moved upon impact !!!
The reason they collapsed, though is because they were designed to resist "domestic" fires, a.k.a a fire that burns at about 800 °C... The kerosene fire that was the case here burned at more than 2000°C !!! it MELTED the supports !

no doubt those guys chose these airplanes carefully ...

Regards to all you americans out there !! we sympathize.

i was emailed this:

I have no idea how people find these things out!
Here is something really strange:
Did you know that a flight number from one of the planes that hit one
of the two towers was Q33NY.
In MS Word, type in that flight number
Enlarge the font size to 26
Change the font to Wingdings

but i don't think that this is the real flight number

It looks like MD-90 has been interviewed by the FBI by Special Agent Jim and is in the clear (so he tells us). :p
http://www.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/577229/

I never thought he had anything to do with it after having read his other posts.

But he does appear to be incredibly (unbelievably?) relaxed about the whole affair!

Eric Darton, who has taught "media, technology and cultural studies at Hunter College and Fordham University," and "currently teaches writing at New York University" wrote a book entitled "Divided We Stand: A Biography of New York City's World Trade Center"

In an interview around the time of publication in 2000 he was asked how the WTC had changed since the 1993 bombing. He replied...

It has certainly transformed as a symbol. One great irony of the towers is that they were built to withstand a 747 slamming into them - the disaster scenario of a more "innocent" era. No one in the mid-'60s, when the buildings were designed, could have anticipated that thirty years later the threat would not come from a stray airplane - a symbol of the machine age gone awry - but from modernity's discontents: terrorists who knew the building's true vulnerability was in its basement. Fortunately they didn't know how to build a bomb that would do what they wanted.

I guess this goes to show that it's not a good idea to reply on someone who teaches "media, technology and cultural studies" when trying to assess the nature of the threat posed by terrorists.
