In the UK, any flight can be IFR provided you are more than 1000' above any obstruction within 5NM of track. Thus, a cross-country on a lovely sunny day just looking out of the window & using a compass and altimeter to keep on track and above said obstructions counts as IFR, UK-style. I has NOTHING to do with 'sole reference to instruments' or any cloud-flying etc.

Now, the rules give you additional credit if you DO have hours by 'sole reference' as each of those hours counts as 4 x the VMC hours.

Sooo, do 100 hours 'by sole reference' and 400 hours x-country enjoying the view and you're there!

In the UK, any flight can be IFR provided you are more than 1000' above any obstruction within 5NM of track.

To add to that, there is no requirement to be 1000ft above the obstacles if you are below 3000ft clear of cloud and in sight of the surface.

Thus every flight can be an IFR flight.

However, don't forget the IFR fuel requirements, equipment requirements and of course what you plan to do for operations in controlled airspace - change to VFR or request an IFR clearance.

Be carefull when abroad as some countries have different rules for IFR flights so check the AIP.

------------

Having said all that, I would caution regarding the excessive use of such a system because when you turn up for your IRI course and claim 800 hours IFR but struggle with IFR IMC flight, it may raise a few eyebrows.

Keep up the sole reference to instrument flight practice also..........eg bring along a safety pilot and a hood.

The IRI is, as discussed on another post very recently, for those experienced pilots who wish to instruct instrument flying. You don't have to have an FI rating to hold an IRI.

If you already have an instructor rating then you can have the applied instrument instruction restriction removed by having a minimum of 10hours ground and 5 hours flying training (exact specifics in LASORS), a flight test and a minimum flight time of 200hours under IFR or 50hours under IMC. If you hold an IR, then by default you already have 50hours (or close to) under IMC in gaining the initial IR.

You also have to hold the rating to teach it!
