Tried to cut and paste, but no luck I am afraid. Air China are now advertising for Sydney and Melbourne based A330 DECs at $US14000 + overtime, and PEK based guys, with firm 1st and business seats for commuting at $15000 + overtime.
That would buy quite a few DVDs I would imagine.
Times they are achangin.

Same old story...they bitch and moan about how much they hate Dubai and EK, can't wait to get back home, yet when an opportunity is presented, you get the usual response..."well, it's not enough $$$" etc etc etc.

Sorry guys,
I hate to introduce facts into what is an otherwise standard pilot v pilot whinge on pprune, but...............
The tax office will only take one third of the 14k per month. A lot of money to be sure, but substantially less than half. In fact at 14k per month which is equal to 168k per year, you will pay (worst case) $55,950, according to the ATO tax calculator. If you have deductions, which anyone earning that salary should have, it will be somewhat less.
These are the facts. Use them as you wish.
Cheers

I am surprised that this thread isn't sitting at the top of the list. So many of you talk so much about 'outbases' or 'commuting' that when a job comes along that pays roughly the same as you earn here, that it isn't getting more attention.
Yes, after tax you will have less money in your pocket BUT don't forget the value of being a resident in your great country. To me it looks like a great opportinity for those of you from down under, what am I missing?

Excuse me for asking the OBVIOUS, but why the FU.CK should anyone leave where they presently are, for something that pays NO more?
Am I missing something, or are you just another SH#T Stirrer?
Because "GOD" knows there are not enough here already.

The notion is that people would rather work from their home country than from the sandpit.
The dream is that after a few years in the gulf their pockets will be sufficently lined to subsidise a taxed salary back home and maintain a comparable quality of life.
The reality is that nowadays few people earn or save enough in the middle east to make the step back home financially viable. So they stay or go on to another expat job.
The only people I know who made a successful step back home supplemented their salary with successful property deaing. For all the reasons well documented on this forum nobody is going to retire rich from a job in the gulf these days.

The word from a mate who is going for an interview from the sandpit is that the salary quoted is tax paid in China (approx 40%). If that is the case then we are looking at a serious upping of the ante in regard to trying to attract pilots.
It can only be good for us.

Has anyone come back from an interview yet that can offer any info on the process?

10th October 2007, 15:28
Fearless, I think Monte answered your question.
The sandpit is not what many of us hoped it would be and EK are a prime source for other airlines to exploit.
Why stay in a place full of dust, heat, humidity, dangerous roads, indifferent management? TO GO HOME.
EK do not have to just be 'competitive' with other carriers, they have to be much better... but they will no doubt take it into crisis before they do anything about it... and then it will be too late.

.
I truely hope this statement will come to be.
.
I however refuse to pass judgement, as I am being realistic at this point.
Not trying to stir the pot, just past experience from another life.
