Hard to tell from the article, maybe an unresettable pack trip or temp controller problem? Or perhaps an indication of a bleed air leak?

TOKYO -- A United Airlines flight from Tokyo to Los Angeles made an emergency landing in Tokyo after detecting an abnormal increase in the cabin temperature, officials said.
Narita Airport spokesman Atsushi Ohira and Transport Ministry officials initially said flight UA890 requested an emergency landing as its pilot reported smoke in the cabin about an hour after taking off from Narita airport in Tokyo.
The plane, a Boeing 747-400, landed safely around 6:20 p.m. local time and no injuries were reported, officials said.
But airline officials denied any smoke inside the plane, which was carrying 334 passengers and 18 crew members.
A United Airlines spokeswoman, Rie Fukushima, said the pilot requested an emergency landing at Narita after detecting an abnormal increase in the cabin temperature.
A Transport Ministry official said investigators are currently checking the discrepancy. The official, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, acknowledged the temperature problem and said inspectors are now unsure whether the smoke really occurred. There might have been miscommunication between the pilot and airport controllers, he added.
Fukushima said the temperature problem was fixed as the plane headed back to Narita, and nobody was sickened from it.
The aircraft is currently being inspected, and the flight will resume after safety is confirmed, she said.
