This evening the beardy Balpa bloke was told that in addition to the 'guards' that appeared around our aircraft today, as of tomorrow we will have to lock our doors. If you want to go to the toilet, you will have to get a CC to sit with the other pilot while you leave the flight deck for a wee.

This is a knee jerk reaction to placate the general public who think that locking the door will solve all the problems. We need better security for the aircraft but it needs to start before the pax ever get to the aircraft. I have no problem with security measures and am happy to comply with them, but I am puzzled as to what deadly weapons the security guards thought that they were going to find in my tampon box last week while pax were just walking through security without a second glance.

I will go along with this if I must, but I would like a sensible reason from someone who knows what they are talking about

More panic in reply to last weeks tragic events , the FAA policy of locked doors did the crews no good last week as the above post points out security must start on the ground.

Locked doors ? no thanks isnt this a safety issue?
Stop them getting on and we dont have a problem.
Armed guards? well lets hope none of them are Muslim sympathisers !

OK so maybe I was a bit premature. I had forgetten it could take beaurocratic powers days and days to actually come to some sort of agreement. Well anyway, today was the day. Much comedy dinging and coded knocks did not hide the fact that it is a farce and no-one really knows exactly what they are doing.

Every member of the general public that I have spoken to thinks we should have locked doors.
I agree, and have been flying that way since 11 Sep. Even though it is not manadatory in my company, which is probably a low risk target.
Having said that, it makes no difference what logo is on the tail, so we all need to take security seriously.
Double doors with a dedicated crew toilet get my vote.
If the powers that be think it's too expensive, then they havn't learnt the cost of an 'accident'.
Of course there are downsides to a locked door policy which will make the job even less desirable; but if this sort of thing happens again there won't be any jobs for any of us. There will be no customers.
If for no other reason than to regain public confidence, security must now be taken seriously, this is just one small, but highly visable part of of the chain.
