Hi people,

As a wannabe who will be applying for various sponsorships I was hoping hoping someone with experience of the cabair instructor scheme (with BE & KLM uk) could help me.

If unsuccessul with BA/Air2K/Airtours etc. I was intending to commence a modular training scheme in the first quarter of 2002. What concerns me is some of the comments included on recent threads in the wannabes forum, highlighting that by taking this route over an integrated one, I would need more hours, probably most wisely spent as an instructor.

Ok...now initially, I thought the cabair/ BE/KLM uk scheme was long winded, and have heard negative things about the manner in which cabair instructors are treated by management  . However, going modular, and getting an FI rating, working to build hours may take just as long, cost more, and will guarantee me no job.

So, whats the score with this scheme? I've heard that people have completed their time instructing to be told there is no job with KLM uk. Is this true?

How much money can you expect to earn per annum?

Over two years of instructing how many hours would you expect to have built?

Are you given a choice of which school you would prefer to teach at?

....and finally, if you could turn back time, would you follow the same route again?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but any answers would be most appreciated.

JT8 - I did the Cabair FI sponsorship in 1992. I wasn't sponsored by Air UK (now KLMuk) but they helped me get a job with them as soon as I completed my IR. They have very strong links with KLMuk. I did 6 years with KLMuk and now work for BA mainline.
So it worked for me !

I instructed for 3 years, had a very enjoyable time did over 1000 hours teaching and still have many ex students as friends.
You be paid peanuts ! I was claiming housing benifit to help pay my rent at the time.
Don't do it if you are someone who does not really want to instruct, I enjoyed teaching people and learn't a lot myself. I still instruct today 10 years on.

I agree!

I worked for Cabair about 5 years ago, at a nice airfield, good school, doing about 500hrs p.a.,for poor money.

Cabair is an odd organisation, though back then they were doing quite well so they more or less left us alone. The KLMuk scheme then seemed a good one (although sadly I wasn't on it), as long as you kept your head down for the 2 years with Cabair.

Reading this forum over the months has highlight that cabair isn't doing as well as it was 5 years ago and things are not as rosey.

Why not phone around the schools and ask to speak to instructors on the scheme and get the present state of play 'from the horses mouth'...but make sure you phone on a rainy day.

So as a rule of thumb what the minimum to get a FI/ATPL sponsorship from Cabair?

1 must be completely stupid
2 must have money to burn
3 must have flexible buttocks to receive a shafting on a daily basis
4 previous membership of cults a distinct advantage(ie those that are easily brainwashed)
