Mon. 0730 CET... Was being driven to Schipol and was passing across the axis of that remote runway, and was watching the aircraft takeoff..... Immediatly after rotate I saw the smoke and 'fireworks" coming out of No.2 engine... Being in a traffic jam we were travelling so slow I easily watched this KLM B737 climb out. I opened the window and heard the distinctive repetitive "pop-pop-pop" and engine surge as it climbed over us. Could find out nothing more about it. Never saw it land back at EHAM ( presuming it would) and nothing on the radio. I was in the terminal at 0900 and heard an announement that the flight to Arlanda "due to depart at 0740 will be boarding shortly from another gate"... so maybe that was it..
Any news would be appreciated. Quite a frightening and fascinating thing to witness first hand....

I think they came back for 36R. Sounds like the severe damage checklist was given a good read!

well done to all

The best handled emergencies are the ones you hear least about.

Sounds like a good job.
