More Gmail woe

Rather than hijack the thread about gmail/spf and so on, I have a similar issue.
My wife complained about her emails being bounced by a Gmail recipient and she also had an email from her domain provider, IONOS, that she needed to up the security on her email software.
She is/was using Outlook 2010. When I tried to up the encryption to TLS it didn't work with complaints about Office 2010 not supporting whatever it was I was trying to do.
OK, I had a copy of Office 2016 so I thought I would install that.
Not so fast.
In my defence she doesn't like any changes so she was still on Windows 7 and Office 2016 it seems wasn't having any of that.
So I installed Windows 10 then Office 2016. Had to use the 64bit version as otherwise would have had to uninstall Office 2010 and I am frightened of doing that as if I loose her emails or addressbook I would be toast. Very burnt toast.
Well all was good with the applications except for Outlook, typical. Can't display folder it says where her emails should be displayed.
I tried renaming the ost file but Outlook 2010, which she still has to use, doesn't load and it makes no difference to 2016.
I have tried reinstalling Office 2016 but makes no difference.
OK nearly there.
Reckon I should uninstall 2010 and do it again but if I do that will I lose her address book ?
If I uninstall 2010, reinstall 2016 and Outlook still doesn't work and her address book has gone I'll have to find somewhere else to live.
Any suggestions/advice ? ( on curing Outlook not where I might move to).

Export everything from Outlook 2010 and try reimporting to the latest on your machine

Outlook is a truly horrible cludge - as bad as Word TBH

Yeah, I could try that, thanks. Outlook isn't my favourite either. Perhaps as a side hustle I'll have a look at installation a different client.

Some of our guys use Thunderbird for personal use and swear by it - I tried it but it wasn't worth the extra effort

I've been using Thunderbird at home since moving away from Windows 7 to Linux a few years ago. I don't think it's as good as Outlook 2010 that I used to use or Outlook 2016 that I use at work - but Thunderbird is more than adequate as a mail client and I'm quite satisfied with it - and it's free (although I do contribute a small sum annually to Mozilla for using FF and TB.

Cheers. I'll try Thunderbird and hope that the domestic resistance to change can be overcome. Outlook 2010 will be there anyway. As for Outlook 2016...perhaps it will get over its sulk.

You should be able to export both the e-mail folders from Outlook 2010 (perhaps you have already done so) and the same for the address book. Backup all of that first! I suspect that the two versions are trying to take use the same or similar area to store e-mails and such and things are getting complicated in that area. You can move the location of the data folders in Outlook and if you're trying to keep the two versions separate, make sure to set the path for the 2016 version to a different folder.

But the easiest solution would be to switch to something that works a bit better for you. I can second the recommendation for Thunderbird, although you need to keep in mind that moving e-mails and such from Outlook to Thunderbird can be challenging. Read up on that first. OTOH, if the e-mail account is set up as IMAP, you should be able to use any client and just add the account. Everything should be there. If it is set up as a POP3 account, back up everything before you lose stuff!

As has been mentioned, Outlook has its quirks (I'm staying civilised) and using a 13 year old version doesn't help. Even the 2016 version is still getting a bit long in the tooth by now. The newer versions won't look all that different, you could also consider investing in a newer licence, but Thunderbird is a lot cheaper!

Thanks. Out of technical curiosity I'll continue to fettle with Outlook 2016. The navigation panel seems to pick up the correct number of unread emails etc but the preview screen just sulks. It's backed up but only via an image of the pre Wndows 10 c drive. I'll set up Thunderbird first then get back to it. I tried renaming the ost file as per most Internet advice without joy. Pointing 16 at a different data file location sounds worth a go.
Cheers all.

Make sure you check the box not to import duplicates when you import from your old backup files into your newly created account Outlook profile. Ask me how I know...
