Windows 10 Mail
Just ordered my first Windows 10 laptop to replace my elderly Toshiba machine running Vista. From what I've read the consensus seems to be that the mail program that comes with W10 is less than perfect so I'm wondering if I can download Windows Mail/Live Mail (are they the same thing?) from somewhere to my new machine.
I finally moved from Outlook Express to Windows Mail a few years ago and am very happy with it so would like to continue with it on the new machine if possible.
Grateful for any advice if this is possible or not and if not, what the best email program to use would be.
(As an aside, I ordered an HP machine this afternoon from their website and it's being delivered tomorrow!)

Good choice of manufacturer for the laptop. I have found the best course of action is to always download any updates from the HP support site. Any problems I have experienced have come from downloading generic drivers directly from Microsoft.
As far as Windows Mail is concerned, I would be inclined to give whatever comes with the machine a go. It might work fine for you. Generally people resist updating to the latest and presumably safest versions because it is natural to resist change in the way you are used to doing things. You are suggesting that you might consider continuing with using an older and perhaps inferior program.
Give it a go and see if it works for what you need it for, otherwise go for a third party application that does exactly what you want, how you want.

The new HP laptop arrived this afternoon (23 hours from order to delivery!) and I'm very pleased with it. I'm quite surprised at how light and thin it is. Less than half the thickness of my old Toshiba with four times as much storage.
Further research seems to indicate that Windows Mail/Live Mail is not available for download anywhere since Microsoft discontinued support earlier this year so I followed your advice and set up the W10 Mail client. All seems to be working fine so I've just got to get used to the new interface and import all the old sent and received emails and the contacts, but that's a job for tomorrow.

HP also have very good support - my 8 month old laptop just stopped - I called them up and the guy onteh end of th ephone was very good, very clear and systematic
Eventually he decided it needed to be looked at - they arranged a free pickup and I had it back within 7 days. they think the charger was u/s and effectively fried the on board power supply

Just a word of caution to those intending to/using old software...
I'm sure you remember the WannaCry malware that infected the NHS amongst many large organisations worldwide recently! This was due to a combination of factors; some infected machines were running Windows XP which has not been supported for a while and has not received the latest security updates however, of more concern was that most infections were on Windows 7 machines that had NOT been updated with the latest security patches from Microsoft.
As a security consultant, please, please, please do NOT use old, deprecated software ESPECIALLY when it is not being downloaded from official sources. This is like opening your front door and disabling your burglar alarm. Please also make sure you manually check for updates every week, especially on W7 systems which aren't so good at automatic updates.

Procrastinus - thanks for that Filehippo link. I had actually found it during my Google searches for Live Mail but despite my best efforts couldn't get it to install. Kept getting a 'couldn't install programs' message alongside a big red cross!
Latest update!! Further investigation of my W10 Start page (ie scrolling down to the bottom!) actually revealed a Windows Live Mail icon which looks like it was there all the time. I'm out this afternoon but I'll further look into this on my return.

Just thought I'd give an update on my email experiences in the four weeks since my new laptop arrived.
1. Windows 10 mail I did not like. It is impossible to transfer old emails and contacts in Windows Mail/Live Mail to Windows 10 mail despite a Google search revealing many sites which try to tell you it is possible.
2. Likewise Thunderbird is not accepting of transfers in so that was a non-starter.
3. Windows Mail/Live Mail is no longer available anywhere so this rendered a like-to-like transfer impossible.
4. After much Googling it appeared to me that the only way to copy all my old emails and contacts off the old computer and onto the new one was to install Outlook on the old computer and copy everything from Windows Mail to that. Then install another copy of Outlook on the new computer and transfer the old data to the new computer via an external hard drive. This was all a bit of a hassle but I got there in the end with everything now on Outlook on the new computer and all working fine.
Incidentally I got my two copies of Outlook from an eBay vendor as part of a full Office 2016 download for just a few pounds (£2.99 to be precise). Valid key provided and it all worked smoothly.

I think my previous link for Windows Live Mail may have been for the on-line installer. This will no longer work.
