Is this unfair or not?????

Since early January I have been in hospital having open heart surgery. After two further visits for check-ups I returned to my computer,,,,,,,,,,,,,great stuff this!

Suddenly discovered my Win7 had been barred as non-genuine 'build 7601' if that means anything but MS would have nothing to do with it, I actually bought W7 from a student supplier......in N Ireland - two copies, one for this laptop and one for the other machine. But........of course, I don't now have the details - or can't remember them. MS say I will have buy another licence - that made me laugh since they don't actually like people doing that!

So, what to do? The internet is full of ways of getting a new and working security key but few of them work. Borrowed ones do.

Answers on a post card please.

My best, Good to be back in the land of the living. Seemed a long way away at one time!!!!!!!

PPRuNe Pop, Sir....

First may I supply my most humble best wishes to you in your medical endeavors of which I am most horrified to hear, of course.

However, medical conditions notwithstanding as a possible contributor to the unusual nature of your post, I do feel I need to ask...

Surely you should know better than posting here asking about how to get your hands on license keys of a questionable origin ?

The first question that needs to be asked is was this a kosher "student supplier" you bought from in the first place or something you found on the darker parts of the internet. If its a genuinely genuine copy, then probably have more options available to you than if it is not.

Sorry to sound harsh, and by no means am I attempting to accuse you of any misdemeanors, but I have to stand firm on the professional views of licensing. Yes the world might hate Microsoft, yes they might have more money than they know what to do with, but one nonetheless has to respect copyright laws and the hard work of the developers employed by Microsoft to write and maintain the software.

I would love to see if I can help you (no promises) , but I need to be reassured of provenance, as they say in the art world.

UPDATE:

I assume your system is fully up to date ? You might just be seeing a bug telling you its non-genuine. I think Microsoft KB articles 3024777 and 3004394 refer, there are patch files attached to those KB articles, one or more of which may need to be applied to your system, but will see if I can find up anything more specific.

Glad to see you back, Pop. We've been worrying about you.

As mixture says...

They've heard them all before. I lost the key for my laptop and had to reinstall Windows from the DVD when the hard drive died. The key was, of course, on the dead HD.

I phoned Microsoft, explained what had happened, and the nice lady told me what the key was. Whether it was my honest voice, or that all that stuff is on file at MS, I dunno.

It's now written in an Excel file that's on laptop, desktop, iPhone, iPad, and the printout hanging by the desk.

If I had a spare Win7 DVD and codes, they'd be yours and the problem would be solved. I thought I was going to have to retire said laptop last month when it refused to boot up, but stern words and reseating the memory chips has returned it to duty in the radio shack.

Give 'em a call.

Give 'em a call.
And if you've got the original Windows 7 install CD to hand, the "inner circle" number on the disc may help your cause if you don't have documentary evidence to hand (receipts etc.)

Hello PPP, good to hear you again!

Have you tried locating the product key in the registry? There's several tools that will help, but it is recoverable manually, albeit with some effort.

e.g. How to Find Your Lost Windows or Office Product Keys

or How To Find Your Windows 7 Product Key [Easy, 5 Min]

Lots of advice for lost product keys.

Pop, glad to hear you have come back from the knife.

Is your old machine full of important items? Or are you free to abandon it and move on to something new?

I generally get a new machine each year, or sometimes more frequently. This time it is a chromebook, which is great for browsing, with superfast boot-up and high speed wifi. After W7 you could well find it refreshing to have a low cost high performance device. Unless of course you need really serious computing stuff.

Keep on truckin'

'mix' - it is totally genuine. The student copies are sent by email with FULL KEY ETC.,

Keef, thank you. I spoke TO MS too but they would not play. Sad that,

However, I'll get to work on trying to find it.

I have had this a few times, ( I do have a genuine copy) and did find a fix, but cant find it right now. It involved downloading a patch from Microsoft (probably a registry fix of some sort). I seen to remember getting rid of one of them by manually running the update.

PPRuNe Pop

In which case sounds like you may indeed need to investigate the patch options mentioned in my later update, at least that will rule that out.

thanks for that. It was a doddle to download and run, and I now have the details off this machine so I do not have PP Pop's problem.

PPRuNe Pop, as one who's just had their staples out I hope you're feeling okay. I suspect yours was a tad more serious than my lumbar issues.

Belarc, and their nice team could not find the Key that was imbedded in my Asus super-shard. And they/we really tried.

The Key symbol on the bottom of the kit showed just the Windows end of the usual strip. It had not been cut, that's how it came.

Right now I wouldn't buy anything that does not declare the Key loud and clear. Finally, on my third bounce between Asus and MS, the latter sold me a full and free 8.1 for $45. A fair compromise.
