Outlook e-mail question.

I recall that when I first used Outlook Express I was advised not to have the "preview" option selected, as this was tantamount to "opening" the e-mail and thereby opening the door to all sorts of nasties to climb aboard my computer - despite not clicking on any "links".

Since then I've embraced Outlook - as part of Office 2007 - and have accordingly also switched off the preview page, but ... I notice that there is also an "AutoPreview" option, which shows the first few lines of every e-mail in the Inbox without selecting any particular one, so does this also open a Pandora's Box, i.e. should I not use this option also ?

Clearly one dumps obvious junk mail without opening, but it isn't always obvious, opening the mail proves to be a mistake - sometimes - but then it is too late, but does this AutoPreview allow one to assess before opening.

Clearly - When in Doubt, Do Nowt, but this brief indication of the message is quite useful, providing it isn't "dangerous" ?

I dropped Outrook many years ago after it hiccuped and lost my entire address book and all stored messages. It had hidden its file of "stuff" where my backups weren't finding it, so there was no way back. I know more about backups now, but don't use the Big O either.

Thunderbird works well, and doesn't preview stuff. Avast sits on the PC, and once or twice a day announces in that lovely female northern voice "Threat has been detected!" I then find a message in the inbox marked "VIRUS!" with the attachment removed.

It gives a warmer, more comfortable feeling. It doesn't catch them all - zipped files get through - but anything unusual gets a careful look-see before opening, and if I wasn't expecting a zipfile I delete 'em anyway.

Keef,

Thanks, can't say I totally disagree and I moved to Thunderbird after a previous suggestion of yours, and got used to it, but picked up a virus from somewhere - not necessarily as a result of Thunderbird - but my Man Wot Does had some objection to it, and as I had a free, unused copy of MS. Office Suite 2007 that I had "won" and never used, after he wiped everything off my computer and started again, I found that I had Outlook installed, so am living with it for now, but if it doesn't behave itself I'll revert to Thunderbird again - maybe.

I need a better email program (Yahoo and G-mail at the moment) but I gathered Outlook had been withdrawn/abandoned. Obviously that's wrong, but it's not included on my Office 2010 or indeed on my 2007.

Am I missing it's location, or does one have to purchase it now. Oh, and when was the last time it was bundled with Office?

MS stupidly dumped Outlook Express, and replaced it with something else that I did not get on with.
So I started using O. For me it is a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but it seems to work OK.
Mine came with a Student version of Office 2007. (Er, if it didn't I dunno how it got here).
I have the "not quite open" Reading pane at the bottom - it works fine by me.
Layered virus protection and applied common sense, backed up by mixture's comments and our man from Bracknell keep me safe most of the time.

Dunno .... I was "presented" a copy of Office Professional 2007 - in 2007 - when I attended a Home Ideas Exhibition, and was chatting to the girl looking after some computer exhibitor, turned out that I ( yes, me !! ) knew more about some aspects of Vista - which I had only recently purchased with a new laptop - than she did, and as a reward she gave me the latest, then, Office 2007 ( I'd learned to make Vista look like Win 98, and reject all the useless visual stuff, which she'd never heard of )

I have for years installed an old copy of Word 97 that I held, on every new computer, laptop, netbook etc ( about 5 in total over the years ) because I know it and am happy with it, but when I bought this last laptop I couldn't locate it in the Very Safe Place that I have presumably stored it, so reluctantly cracked open my Office 2007, still unused 7 years later, and as already described, my Man Wot Does installed Word 2007 and Outlook.

I hate Word 2007 as vigorously as I hate Windows h'eight, far too many options that I don't understand and will never use, Word 97 was more than sufficient. Maybe I should have gone for Libre Office or similar, but I'm learning to cope - slowly.

Same with Outook, what was wrong with Outlook Express, which morphed into Windows Mail, then Windows Live Mail - until I dumped it all and went to Thunderbird, now dumped on the advice of my Man Wot Does, as described in my original post.

All these "improvements" may be well and good for them wot wants them, I don't. it's like being forced to buy a ex[ensive camera with an f1.2 lens and a 4000th/sec shutter to to be able to photograph a jumping black cat in a coal cellar, then using it all the time at f16 and 250th/sec on the beach!!

Just my 'apporth, and thanks BOAC for the heads-up on the preview pane stuff, sounds .... ???? ..... as if it might be OK ? ( pays y'money and takes y'choice I guess.)

Thread drift - Photography. I started with 12"x10" glass plates in a brass and mahogany camera with a black cloth over my head, reluctantly moved down to a 4"x5" Speed Graphic, then a 120 roll film Super Ikonta, then a 35mm Leica, and now of course something digital by Canon, so I guess all progress isn't bad !

Thanks for the advice, great Forum.

ExSp33db1rd, I agree. For many years I was entirely happy with Outlook Express and Office XP - a combination which met all my needs.

When I bought a new laptop 4 years ago, it came with that utter POS termed Windows Live Mail. Fortunately I was able to $hitcan it and return to OE. But the new version of Office was Office 2007 and it was far less simple to use, particularly for Word. I have now got used to it, but having to open different tabs merely to set the font or to spellcheck is rather a pain.

When my hard drive died, I was forced down the Win7 route. So it was goodbye to Outlook Express and hello to Outlook - which for simple e-mail requirements is somewhat OTT.

I also needed a back up computer and bought one with Win8.1 and Office 2013. Even Win8.1u1 is pretty dire, but Office 2013 is frankly appalling - horrid, glaring screen panes and stupid UPPER CASE headers. What utter idiot thought that was a good idea? Or perhaps it was simply to appeal to yoofs and their tablet computer toys?

The ribbon bar names are soft: i.e. you can edit them.

So a bit of Google-fu suggests: Right click the tab heading > Customize the ribbon > Click on the tab you want to rename. Either right click and select "Rename" or click the "Rename" button below. Then put a space before or after the tab title. The tab title will now appear in sentence case.

Or, Fix the ribbon bar ALL CAPS casing on new microsoft applications automatically | Dream Walker

Usual disclaimers: not been there, not done that, stand back before pressing Enter, price of fish.

OK, so that might fix one of Micro$oft's Office 2013 stupidities, but what about the background colour schemes? In Word 2007 they were blue, silver or black, with blue the most popular. Whereas in Word 2013 they're white, almost white or not quite as white - all of which are pretty dire.

Who are the idiots who make these decisions? Don't they ask average users whether they like their proposals?

Too much geekery such as 'snapping apps' (whatever the heck that means) and not enough thought given to the average user, in my view.....

Well don't be too grateful for getting that issue sorted. I'm not your whipping boy. Use Google or the Help button for more office themes.
