Thunderbird problem

Travelling, occasional WiFi access to home ISP Webmail, download to Thunderbird to read Offline at leisure. OK for last week,but now ...... yesterday opened an e-mail from trusted friend with a 'round robin' series of photographs and text, i.e. Internet "funny", and now can't download my e-mails from the server, tho' I can still read the webmail server OK.

I get a message downloading "1 of XX messages", but only the same "funny" appears then nothing else. I've totally removed the "funny" from the server and cleared the Trash and Spam folders, re-booted, switched off, etc. etc. but still this same e-mail - now zapped off into Cyberspace by me - is the only e-mail that will still download, tho; it isn't even on the server !

My virus scanner says no problem, but the local I.T. shop (USA) says I appear to have a virus, with which I would agree, and they need money with menaces and 3 days ownership of my computer - Asus EeePC - to even give an opinion. Cheaper to buy a new machine !

I occasionally get a message that pop3 etc is not possible until I go into settings for Thunderbird and untick 3 options, one of which is to leave a copy on the server, which is a no-no for me, my wife needs her own access at different times so we have to leave a copy on the server, initially at least.

'tis a puzzlement - and annoyance.

Any clues pls?

1. Try one of the online virus scanners (such as Trendmicro).

2. Are you sure the offending e-mail is gone from your server? I had a "nasty" on mine a while ago that wouldn't disappear until I called my ISP to zap it.

Thanks, problem solved tho'.

My friend had a meltdown of his Outlook Express, which just kept on and on sending his message to me non stop. So everytime my Thunderbird completed quite a long download, and tried to move to the next message it found his message still there and started to download again, then just timed out in disgust.

Thunderbird problem.... For a number of years I drank the blue label bottles, then I hit the red label offering, jezz it's rocket fuel. Drink water water and more water to avoid a hangover the next morning.

Anyone who drinks Thunderbird is a pal of mine.

I can't help with the OP's particular problem with Thunderbird but I had my own issues a year or two ago when I used XP - I got a lot of suggestions from PPRuNers some good and a few less so!

Since moving to Win 7 and a variant of Gmail I stuck with Thunderbird but am getting problems again - new and sillier ones now. I moved from Firefox to PaleMoon about a year ago - it's not obviously so different but I prefer it for reasons not all directly related to its functioning - and this has prompted me to think about FossaMail which is something akin to a cousin of PaleMoon. Do any of you have experience of FossaMail and what can you advise about it, please? It may be my age but I want to continue with an e-mail client rather than accessing my Gmail variant through my browser.

It might interest the OP too if it turns out to be steadier than Thunderbird seems to have become....

It works as well/poorly/adequately as Thunderbird does, as one would expect. As you can see from the website, they claim different compiler and other optimizations result in a more stable product.


If you use the 64-bit version of FossaMail AND Lightning, at the moment you need to turn off automatic updates since the updater will install the 32-bit version of Mozilla Lightning rather than the 64-bit Pale Moon Lightning, breaking stuff. I don't know if this issue has been fixed.

Thank you, Bushfiva. So I may be a bit premature! I have been pleased with PaleMoon, as I've said, and my technical issues with Thunderbird (as with Firefox) are not the whole story so I am disposed towards trying FossaMail provided its technical status is no worse than Thunderbird. I can see that I need to find out more - particularly if I can benefit from the personal experience of those who know more.

I'm not likely to benefit much from the inclusion of Lightning because I use the ReminderFox extension with great happiness and I'm a 32 bit pilot at the moment, anyway.

No, it's just a bug that arrived at some point, and will be fixed, if not already. And since you're 32-bit, it doesn't affect you anyway.
