Question XP and hibernate

If I try to get this machine to go into hibernate or standby it gives the error "update generic volume driver". The the mouse pointer vanishes!. .. .Any ideas appreciated.

The machine you are talking about must be a high-sophisticated aeroplane if it recognizes the pilot as being over duty and it decides it may want to do some extra sectors.. .Of course, it fits the abilities of this aeroplane, if it automatically deletes all mice and associate identification pointers.... . .. .What are you talking about? A PC, a laptop...which conditions?

Cyclic!. .I have noticed a few oddities with the hibernate and standby capabilities within XP. The deal is that you can only have Hibernate OR Standby operational at any time unless you count powering down the monitor and hard drives as standby. You can turn H'te on /off in Power Options. The system file that deals with power management is hal.dll which is loaded in to the System32 file. You can replace this file from you XP CD in case it is corrupted. The file is modified by Norton Anti Virus and that was the cause of my failure of Stby and Hib. I know this is not a solution but it may give you some pointers!

Not quite on topic, but for reference... .. .My XP desktop woudn't stay in standby any longer than a few minutes until I installed the latest two critical updates from MS. Now it stays in no problem, but sometimes has to be rebooted to come out using the reset button on the tower case. . .. .Seems like they 'overfixed' the problem!
