In a week when temperatures in southern Europe are nearing 50 degrees, life threatening heatwaves are affecting the two largest economies in the world, extreme flooding events are destroying lives and property and the world is hotter than it has been for 120,000 years, maybe these “eco activists cretin scum” will end up being on the right side of history. 🤷‍♂️

Perhaps the "cretinous scum" are the ones engaging in excessive consumption and related CO2 emissions. Last year there were over 61,000 excess deaths in Europe alone due to abnormally high heat. You may object to the way these activists are getting the message across, but they are undoubtedly getting the media attention that they seek and which the subject deserves. They may also be giving some quite relevant career advice to anyone considering aviation-related careers. That is quite likely why they are getting a reaction hereabouts.

“Jets and Yachts, the party is over”,

in the scientific journal Nature Medicine, the new study examined data from 35 European countries representing populations totaling more than 543 million people. ..... the researchers estimated that 61,672 people died of heat-related causes across all 35 countries during the summer of 2022.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...analysis-finds

Heatwave last summer killed 61,000 people in Europe, research finds Hottest summer on record – fuelled by climate crisis – brought unusually high mortality rates, statistics show ..... “We found 60% of the observed deaths can be attributed to climate change,” said Vicedo-Cabrera.

As for objecting to their choice in footwear, that is attacking the messenger / not the message (and is never a good look).

Precisely. The biz/private jet is just a symbol of the carbon footprint of the rich, no matter whether it is a toy or a tool -- and it is both toy and tool. Search up something like carbon footprints of the rich and you'll find that the world's wealthiest 10% are responsible for 50% of carbon emissions. Perhaps if the rich were to do some actions -- they could be as performative as they like -- to actually address climate change, they would get more sympathy.

What? Like developing electric cars to the point that they can actually replace petrol ones? or making Solar PV generation so cheap and accessible that actually worth doing and possible? or paying for the development of nuclear technology that not only doesn't require water to keep it cool but also burns 80% of the nuclear waste that we already have? Or funding new technology that will allow people to store electricty at a density that would allow for us to fly those self same private jets in a far more carbon efficient way without using materials mined by Congolese children? Or fund vaccination programmes that save thousands? Or educate young people where education is too expensive for locals to pay for?

You mean that kind of thing? yeah I really wish they would do that too. Wait, I think they already do...

The reality is, culture change takes 50 years and the solution is going to have to be a technological one.

In the meantime, average people still drink too much milk, eat too much cheese and beef, buy too much stuff they don't need from amazon and use their computers to vent stuff on the internet.
Far too much virtue signalling from these stop private jets types. There's so much more to do than run around complaining about rich people being rich and doing rich things when the reality is that the problem is much closer to home.

From "How can we stop the super-rich from polluting the planet" at dw dot com:

"'In reality, we see a surprising support of the lifestyles of the very wealthy,' said Stefan Gössling, a professor at Lund University in Sweden who has studied inequalities in flight emissions. People brought up in cultures that idolize the rich often oppose policies to restrict their lives."

And the idea to do just something won´t change a thing either. In Germany the green/red government (red as in socialist) wants everyone to heat their homes with heat pumps.

Now at the current ratio of coal generated electricity in Germany that would double the CO2 emission compared to oil heating and quadruple CO2 emission compared to gas heating.

One can´t build a house from the roof downwards. You start with a foundation.

As for "private jets" - I fly one for a big corporation that pays taxes on the fuel and we do ONLY business related flights. In Germany, 69% of all taxes generated are generated by business. The discussion on business jets is PURELY to bring greed and envy into the debate. As to airline pilots being smug about it, cause its only the bizjetdrivers jobs, yours will be next, make no mistake.

I'm sure I recall reading years ago that aircraft fuel was untaxed in the BRD - has that changed ?

fuel for commercial flights (one where the passengers are paying another business for the use of the aircraft and it’s crew) is free of VAT and duty. Private flights pay tax, in this case one where a company is transporting its own employees.
They will claim other taxes back as the aircraft is being used for business purposes though.

Theres plenty that could be done to curb air travel but the whole private jets thing is the low hanging fruit because it affects relatively small number of people, it also has a negligible impact on the CO2/NO emissions.

A different solution might be to heavily Tax (100%?) all non essential flights and send 100% that money to improve the ground transportation. It would crush aviation and the whole holiday industry but that’s the idea right?

I’m not actually against the concept of curbing aviation but this whole attitude of looking at one tiny piece of the puzzle, blaming it and using it as the justification for damaging someone’s property is just childish.

in the meantime I still need to put food on the table.

The only tax we reclaim is VAT where it was added beforehand - as is the case with anything business related in the EU.

The fuel tax (mineral oil tax) exemption is indeed only possible for commercial operators, despite a ruling a few years back by the highest financial court in Germany saying if an airplane is used solely for the commercial purposes of the company owning and using it, the fuel shouldn´t be taxed.
One secretary of finances (can´t recall which, I think it was Steinbruck) put a "Nichtanwendungserlass" in place - which means the tax offices are to ignore that ruling. Which should be highly illegal, but isn´t...

in the meantime I still need to put food on the table

Yes, and temperature here in Warsaw, Poland dropped by 5 Celsius since the moment they sprayed yellow paint on that bizjet. They are not cretins, they immedietly not only made my city a little bit less hot but also reduced carbon footprint of my air-conditioning unit.

I'm sorry but that's bull!

Having investments in industries that have large carbon footprints is not the same as 'being responsible for'.
I have a pension, investments, unit trusts and other savings. Much of it no doubt invested in industry that produces large quantities of CO2. That doesn't mean my carbon footprint is just as big.

Yay, so all the aircraft are grounded, military too. Global CO2 is reduced by a massive 3%!!!!

Thank the gods, we are all saved.

Give me strength!

You may be quoting the law, but I'm sure you know that this does not reflect reality, since you appear to be closely involved. I am not an accountant but I read that the aircraft on Sylt is "owned" by an Austrian company, although it is recognised that the real owner is a real-estate developer from Grevenbroich. Presumably all use is invoiced by the Austrian company to the German company: no fuel tax is paid because it's a "commercial" operation and the invoices are calculated so that the Austrian company makes no/minimal profits and pays no taxes on revenue in Austria and the German operation can offset its flight lcosts against taxes in the BRD.

Please - Boabity and his dudeness - don't give us half a story to fool us when you are certainly aware of all the story.

(IMHO)

The fact is - the world over time goes through cycles of warming and cooling and it just happens that at this moment in time we are the ones that are experiencing a 'warmer' period (have to take a moment here to give credit how weather charts used for television weather reports now use much more lurid colours and descriptors for hot weather to try and alarm the populous).

It's nothing new although the fact we as a developed species have access to the technology to spread this information globally means it is given awareness anywhere and everywhere. This has no more about the human interaction with global climatology than the opportunity for governments and bodies globally to use it to introduce new taxes and raise prices for producing various commodities. Its also amazing how these "eco protestors" also are wearing man made fibres and materials (oil required to produce) as one small example and to travel to places (and I will guess not by walking) to make their weak-assed points. 'Just Stop Oil' for one example needs a severe wake-up call, absolute dim-witted moronic people - and they also need protecting from themselves as very shortly I can see them getting hurt by the ever more frustrated public in the U.K. - and no-one wants to see that despite being such a hated group.
