Comparing Australian capital city airports to West African ones?
Now that is setting the bar really high.

And Australian pilots criticising easily identifiable air traffic controllers anonymously. You wouldnt find that happening to an Aussie controller who is obviously good at his job and showing his enjoyment in an overseas appointment.

What the hell have we become in Australia?

I guess we get the airports we deserve.....

In regards to the track miles they give us, can someone explain where those numbers actually come from? Is that just their estimate or are those numbers precisely what you're going to get? Because I swear to God 22nm feels different everyday.

LongLats,
I have found that the track miles are almost always five miles out.
The trick is guessing which way!

Well I guess I'm the only one who has beef with the American guy.

In regards to the track miles they give us, can someone explain where those numbers actually come from? Is that just their estimate or are those numbers precisely what you're going to get? Because I swear to God 22nm feels different everyday.
While you're busy beefing about the professionalism of "the American" and sweating perceived inaccuracies in track miles, who's actually flying the airplane?

Just wondering.

Probably the PF. Good question though

LongLats,

I am not a radar approach controller but it's the best guess of the person doing it. There are some rules of thumb used I believe.

Why don't you organise a trip to the Sydney TCU and ask these questions of them? Perhaps they can show you how they do it and what they are estimating off.

This demonstrates the advantages of not having a distinctive voice/accent/gender in ATC. It also works both ways. Lots of ATC positions have regular distinctive pilots, often complete with nicknames (sometimes even non offensive).

Track miles given by the director are constantly plus or minus 10 of the quote, so I wouldn't get upset about someone not telling you the track miles to run. Just look out the window and fix it up if your high.

The ex-Socal (lax) director is usually laughing at the other director's 'aspirational' track miles.

In reality Director just want you low ASAP and runway in sight during IVAs. PRM is a whole other story.

Come and have a drink with us. 26/6. PM me for details.
