Kingy - just spotted the perfect next project for you on EBay!!

Anyone else is more than welcome to go for it, of course!

There's a self-build (part finished) Sea Fury for sale on EBay which is currently at £102 (Buy it Now price £1000) - auction closes at 2346 (local) tonight, 1 Aug 03.

There must be someone out there who can go for it?? :)

Bagsy a flight in it when it's completed as my 'finders fee' ;) ;)

Have a look here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2942685010&category=2979)

Don't you think it's a little irresponsible to encourage Kingy to buy even more aeroplanes? I mean there won't be any left for the rest of us soon. :{

Aerbabe Don't you think it's a little irresponsible to encourage Kingy to buy even more aeroplanes? You are obviously suffering from the delusion (as a result of wimping out of Sherburn ;) ;) ) that I'm responsible!

I'm so irresponsible that I may even go on another thread and call you an 'old fart'! :) The only thing that's stopped me so far is some old saying about pots and kettles, associated with the colour black ......... :O

Still, I was only after my 'finders fee' anyway.....

Buy it without seeing a picture? No way.

All woodwork complete just requires to be foamed in and fibre glassed.

Right, that won't take long then........

Good luck to the purchaser, I'm sure what's been done is to at least an acceptable standard as it's been signed off by a PFA Inspector but there's a bit too much left to do to tempt me.

PS I knew a chap who did the test flying for one of these mini Sea Furys. He had to take his shoes off to fly it as the controls were that sensitive. Shed loads of fun once you get used to it apparently.

It didn't sell - never reached the reserve. Kingy could make the owner an offer. Or.....what is this aircraft anyway? Is it fun? Could I learn to fly it without it taking me forever, bearing in mind I'm a slow learner? Most importantly, would some nice person like to build it for me?? ;)

Whaddya mean, I've got a nerve. I'm only asking. :)

Damm and double damm... I missed it!

I have two days 'off' Pprune due to having to earn a living and look what happens!

Ah yes the WAR replicas... they are definetly on my list, always fancied one of them. Actually it could be a good buy, it really depends on the standard of construction, Mmm... I'll just drop him a little Email to find out a few details I just know you are all curious ;)

Talking of bargains, I did buy a new flying machine last week out of my local free ad paper. Its a hang glider and I paid a hundred quid for it ... she's a beauty, all complete and everything!

I'm gonna try ridge soaring from my field in a stiff westerly. I was watching the gulls the other day and they seem to manage it quite well - I recon I'm onto a winner :D

sensitive
can't see where you're going on the ground or short final
no directional control if you raise the tail before 40mph
will get airborne below stalling speed while in the ground effect (see the accident report here (http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_avsafety/documents/page/dft_avsafety_501245.hcsp) ) - before my time!!

But above all, :E it's a blast!

I had about 10 hours tailwheel when I bought it. p.s. whirly my 1800hrs Wessex didn't count! Got about 20hrs on her now, but down for maintenance at the moment :{

I wonder if it sold as it hadn't met it's reserve price???

There was a lot less work than I first suspected too.

You going for it Circuit Basher ? I'd be tempted seeing as it seems to be in a more complete state than I originally thought.

Floppy Link will a 6' tall 15 stone chap fit into one of these tiddlers?

Floppy Link
19th Aug 2003, 21:38
you'll fit but c of g and max allup weight will be outside the envelope with full fuel.

I'm 6"2 / 13st and can only take half tanks

it's a tight squeeze to get in but you get used to it

p.s if CB finishes it we'll have 3 at Perth! See the other two here (http://www.scottishaeroclub.org.uk/sac/images/open_day03/orange_whip.jpg)

Floppy Link as they are not "cruising" aeroplanes, a bit of a tight fit wouldn't seem to be a problem. Are they aerobatic? Can they operate off a (not too bumpy) grass strip?

Circuit Basher if you change your mind, let me know :ok:

Checked the PFA Web site yesterday and the Fw190 is accepted as aerobatic. Checking the CAA database, there are 4 WAR Fw190s in UK, one P47 and no Sea Furys. That may well explain the reason for the Sea Fury not being cleared as aerobatic.

As I'm a lean 13.5 stone ( ;) ), I was just wondering what could be left out during the build to improve the available payload??!! :D

The PFA revoked the Fw190 aerobatic clearance a while back.
None of the designs are aerobatic in the UK. PFA Website inaccurate.
CAA database accurate, to clarify, G-JABO (and I think G-CCFW) is still being built, G-SYFW is at Perth with my G-BTBI P47, G-BSLX and G-WULF are elsewhere. Let's get 'em all to Perth!
The first ever WAR Sea Fury was built in the UK, by Peter Pykett of Andover. First flight was 24 Feb 1985 from Thruxton, but the aircraft is no more, see G-BLTG accident report (http://www.warbuddies.homestead.com/files/AAIB-UKl-seafury.html)
They may not be aerobatic, but they are fun to throw about! Just not at low level like the unfortunate Sea Fury chap (not the original builder)

Grass not recommended, it it possible but the gear is a wee bit spindly. My first P47 flight was off grass, and it worked OK but I prefer a hard runway.

After my ferry flight, Sackville to Carlisle (nightstop) to Perth. My first thought was that it would make a great touring aircraft - there is a wee shelf behind the seat where I put a drawstring cloth bag which had toothbrush, toothpaste, undies and socks. I was considering going to the air2000 fly-in at Bicester next month before I had gear problems. Plus it's a good pose when people congregate around and ask questions...

Hi folks
Just been on the phone to the owner - I'm going to visit it on wednesday, mainly with the idea of a source of signed off hard to find parts for my P47.
The quote for refurbishing a P47 gear leg is £X
The asking price for the Sea Fury project is £X
so I get a new gear leg and a potential project as well :ok:
Will advise. I may have to enlist the help of Circuit Basher when he's next at Perth. CB just look for the chap in grubby overalls lying under the P47 in the very far corner of the hangar...

Russell

FL the way I land I wouldn't risk spindly undercarriage legs  especially as our runway has a bit of a ski jump half way down it........

Good luck with the Sea Fury project, as I said before, my friend who did the Permit test flight for G-BLTG loved it once he got used to the sensitive handling. :ok:

Sea Fury project...
well I went to visit, it might not be a good source of parts for the P47, but it would be great for tinkering on in my empty workshop. Have to check my P47 oleos to see if the gear is compatible. Build quality of wooden structure is good, some foam may have to be redone. Lots of bits and bobs including some instruments and control pushrods inc. bellcranks. Lots of work done, lots of work left to do...

FL if you change your mind it would fit into my empty garage and give me something to while away the long winter hours. I'm sure I could find a corner in a hangar attached to a flatter strip than I currently operate off.....
