Plane plunges into Lake Geneva

Grenoble, France - A small tourist plane plunged into Lake Geneva on the border between France and Switzerland on Saturday afternoon, killing two people, one of them an 11-year-old boy, French rescue workers said.

Around 40 rescue workers were sent out to try and locate the plane, thought to have sunk 50m below the surface of the lake, to retrieve the boy's body, they said.

It was not immediately clear why the Swiss-registered plane nosedived into the lake, 200m from the French lakeside town of Saint-Gingolph, they said.

Crash à Saint-Gingolph: les recherches ont été interrompues

BERNE - Un avion de tourisme immatriculé en Suisse s'est ab'mé dans le Léman, près du port français de Saint-Gingolph. Le pilote, un ressortissant suisse domicilié en Haute Savoie, a pu s'extraire de l'appareil. Son fils âgé de onze ans est toujours porté disparu.
Les plongeurs ont retrouvé le siège sur lequel le garçon était assis avec la ceinture de sécurité détachée. Les recherches ont toutefois été interrompues pour la nuit vers 20h15, a indiqué la police cantonale vaudoise. L'avion, un monomoteur, g't par 50 mètres de fond.
Plusieurs dizaines de secouristes ont été engagés sur les lieux de l'accident. Des plongeurs valaisans et vaudois ont participé aux opérations, a indiqué un porte-parole de la police valaisanne.
Pour une raison indéterminée, l'avion, qui avait décollé de Prangins, dans le canton de Vaud, a plongé dans le lac à environ 200 mètres de la rive. L'accident a eu lieu aux alentours de 14h00.
Le maire de Saint-Gingolph Raymond Peray a indiqué au téléjournal de 19h30 sur la TSR que le pilote de l'appareil, «un vieil avion de 1937», aurait apperçu le bateau «La Savoie» sur le lac et voulu «croiser entre l'embarcation et le rivage». Comme il «volait trop bas», il se serait écrasé au cours de la manoeuvre, a ajouté M. Peray.
Souffrant de différents traumatismes, le pilote a été transporté par hélicoptère au CHUV à Lausanne, a indiqué la police cantonale vaudoise. 122119 jul
