With the 767-400 using the P&W's PW4062, the same ones used by 767-300s. Even with GE CF-6-80C2B8F at 63,500 lbs, it's only 200 lbs of additonal thrust compared to the P&W's. Wouldn't this significantly degrade the -400's performance ability compared to other 767s? Or is it just that the other 767s are extremely overpowered.

Maybe even 76 drivers out there who have flown the 400 and the older models?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you are correct about the thrust shortfall. When we quizzed the guys flying the demo 767-400 (at Sydney), they said that more powerful engines would be provided in the future. Although the aircraft will be slightly more aerodynamically efficient, I can't tell you if this would make up for the shortfall.

Cheers.

Although the Boeing site says the -400ER uses 72000 pound engines, Delta have chosen GE CF6-80C2-B8F with only 63500 pounds.

If you think of small planes with huge differences in engine power eg Piper Cherokees or Cessna 172/182 etc etc I suppose one shouldn't be surprised if big jets can tolerate variations in powerplant.

The CF6 80C2 is the most powerful engine currently available on the 767-400, the 72000lb thrust version you mention is planned
for the 767-400ERX, as ordered by Kenya Airways, with a higher max GTOW and an additional stabilizer fuel tank.

Spoke to a colleague within Delta who claims the company are very disillusioned with the performance of the 76-400.

Plans for the aircraft included ATL-HNL non-stop this winter and ATL-GIG and ATL-EZE non-stop from the spring.

It's cost Delta a small fortune reassigning the aircraft onto the LAX and SFO-HNL services, whilst ATL-HNL is back to the good ole L1011.

Couldn't get anything more specific performance-wise out of him, but hope this helps.

The Delta troubles are reminiscent of when AA launched the MD-11 and had initial range shortfalls. I'm sure Boeing is paying some penalty, or maybe tossing in a freebee 757-200<g>..

Ah....Lockheed, the 'ole L1011 to the rescue...again. At this rate, maybe Delta will NEVER get rid of them.
