Just a scenario about which I am curious.
You are a pilot that has just been employed by airline X.
You will be flying long haul eg London to Chicago.
When you train in the sim before doing it for real, will you fly that route in real time or accelerated time during cruise?

Fast forward. Sim time is too precious to do it in real time.

The majority of all simulator details are a standard 4 hours.

Unless you're flying Concorde to Chicago, the exercise will not be in real time.

The simulator is normally used for recurrent training and checking. The time is mainly set aside for the practice of ground and inflight emergencies that in the real world are not very likely to be encountered or otherwised practiced. Quite often these emergencies are incorporated into what is known as as a Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT) exercise. If such a LOFT involved a flight from London to Chicago it would be only a matter of minutes into the flight before things started to go wrong. Before the flight had esablished more than a few minutes into the cruise the scenario would normally dictate an event or series of events that would necessitate an urgent diversion to a nearby airfield.

The simulator is also a very useful tool for complying with some category C airfield checks. In this context complicated or difficult approaches can be practiced or experienced in the simulator prior to operating into an airport for the first time.

In reality most pilots operate into new airfields for the first time during the course of ordinary line flying. This is quite normal as very few airfields are other than category A or Category B. The simulator is not used for training for flying on a particular route since it would serve precious little function as a training tool in that role. Getting to Chicago may seem a little daunting on FS2000 but to a trained pilot it is not much different from flying anywhere else. If it necessary to practice a take off from one airfield and an approach into another that are a considerable distance apart the aircraft is simply re-positioned by the simulator instructor from one position to another.
