I had to post this link. Be sure to also scroll down to the second set of pics showing the landing spot on the island. And 'spot' is the correct word:

Worked for me! ...which makes a change, cos nothing much else is working on this machine at the moment...
All I can say is

Stik - that shortfield landing we did when you let me play in your little yellow tailwheel, when we stopped before the yak parked up on that grass strip... How many times longer was that? :)

Looks like the supercub.org server is playing up tonight. Strange, cos it's usually very reliable. Keep trying though -- these pics are worth it.

Couldn't get the link to work, either.

Aerbabe - you got the Aeronca down and stopped in about 120metres, not at all bad for a first attempt. We should go play again!

Well, the site is up again.

Here are a couple more to goggle at. The last is quite amazing.

Nice approach...

Thanks for the link QDM³ - it's working again now.

As one of the people says in the thread - humbling!

Great pctures:

Many years ago (1969 ) I flew a Super Cub in the Canadian Arctic with "BIG" tundra tires. We were contracted to fly geologists all over the Arctic.

The picture of the Super Cub on the mountain top is exactly like one I landed on in the Arctic, it also took several days to get the right wind and very careful approaches with break offs before I commited to actually land the thing. My biggest problem was manhandling the bas...d into the correct position to launch it back off the mountain top. I almost lost it over the side trying to get it in place. :) :)

As long as the wind and turbulence is safe it really is no big deal to land a Super Cub on an area such as in the picture.

What could be a big deal is fu....g up the landing. :D

I thought long and hard before I posted this as there is a very thin line between professionalism and stupidity, but we all do risky things and not to admit to it is unprofessional. :) :)

Having had our L-4 in the family for 22 years, I know you can land a Cub anywhere... it's just getting it out that can give you grey hair.

Oh for 90 or even 130 hp (ours still has an A65). Oh for being thinner and lighter...

Now, before any smart Alec notices the time of posting and tells me I am sad, I must dash for our New Year's Eve party!

OK, OK so sometimes I do wish for the other 75HP. And better brakes.:D

of course, I meant to say extra 85HP. On second thought maybe it'd be wasted on me..

I've never flown in a cub.

Will someone PLEASE take me up in one of these things???

Dusty_B,

It isn't a cub you want, it's a Supercub:

http://www.supercub.org/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Supercubs&id=ayd

http://www.supercub.org/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Supercubs&id=ati

http://www.supercub.org/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Supercubs&id=atj

http://www.supercub.org/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Supercubs&id=awp

A cub will get you in, but a Supercub will get you out too.

If you're at Eggesford next season, come flying.

Dustyb et al,

About 10/11 years ago I went along to Clacton for their SuperCub conversion and Farmstrip course. Assuming that the content has not changed I would highly recommended it.

No doubt someone with more brains than I possess can post a link to their web-site (if they have one!)

Your wish etc (http://www.clacton-aero-club.uk.com/)
Not so sure about more brains though :)

Q3: I have to rise to the bait, but sadly can't disagree on your performance analysis. Except that by definition, therefore, the non-super Cub requires more skill, verve, elan...

My L4, one up with it's new climb prop gets off as short as any Super Cub I've seen - I've got to admit its a different story with two on board though!

Great Pics, in fact, a great site - thanks

Kingy a climb prop on an L4  My L4 with a standard prop cruised at 75 mph. Do you go backwards in a 20 knot headwind :D :D

The current Auster cruises at a masterful 95 mph. It's like having a jet after the L4, you can actually see the ground move ;) More "interesting" to land too

There's a fun comparison here (http://www.airbum.com/pireps/CubComparison.html) .
Oh the things to look forward to for after getting the PPL :)

EI: there you go, and then some! I've seen that nice article before, but it's still a pleasure to read- note all the skill and judgement required in the J2. ;) Cute as a Bug, Piper Cub

Low N Slow

Yes the new prop's an Italian GT and has totally changed the plane - they are actually using a pic of my Cub in their advertising as it's the first one approved in the UK (long, long process!) performance is better in every respect and only yesterday I timed the climb @ 625fpm one up (but im 200+lbs)...thats good for a Cub.

I often visit fields less than 200m and my home field (Eastbach) is'nt exactly massive!

Kingy,

Would you happen to know the AAN number for that prop approval - and is it a CAA or PFA AAN?

The Cub is on a PFA permit. Im not sure what you mean about the AAN number. The PFA required information from GT regards the suitability of the prop for a Cub. Being Italian with limited English this exchange took a while to say the least!

Im not a expert, but I think although series built and certified, A/C like the Cub operating on a PFA permit are not strictly tied to the 'official' approved prop list and can, at the PFA's discression be fitted with non certified props. This is not widely known even amongst inspectors and not actively encouraged.

When finally approved the prop change went through as a standard PFA mod subject to an inspector's sign off for fitting and satisfactory ground runs and air test, which I did:)

Hope this helps

K
