Russian Controllers Hungry For Better Pay
Dec 23, 2002
Low paid air traffic controllers in a Russian provincial city went on a hunger strike at the weekend in pursuit of a better wage deal.
The action, the second of its kind, was taken by around 30 controllers based in Omsk, Siberia on Sunday but flights were reported to have been unaffected.
On Saturday, the Russian controllers union rejected a 15 percent wage increase and called on their members in half the Russian regions to take action. The controllers had demanded a 30 percent rise on their monthly salary of around USD$470.
Under Russian law, the controllers are not allowed to stop work, but can take other action. Earlier this month several hundred of them refused food but continued to operate.
The cost of living in oil-rich Siberia has been climbing and public employees have been left far behind in the pay league.
