I'm currently a Radar controller with (I presume) an out of date Tower rating. I'm interested in doing Tower and/or Approach so I guess I need to do a course or two. So if there is anyone out there who could give me a few ideas on where I could do them (I don't want to go to CATC if possible) and how I get in touch with the relevant people I would be very grateful.

I'm quite ashamed that I know so little about the outside world to have to ask, and in case you haven't guessed I would prefer that my Management didn't find out, hence I would rather do the courses outside of NATS if poss.:D ;)

Cheers

Stranger - before you do that, get in touch with SERCO, Sally Johnston is the bod who runs ATC matters,
Bartley Wood Business Park,
Hook.
Hampshire.

They use both Shagwater and the new outfit at Rudloe Manor, and more inportantly, may be willing to pay for your conversion training.

Not being funny but your lack of knowledge of ATC outside of NATS and your inability to find out the simplest things yourself beggars the question - are you sure you're in the right career? Have you really spent the last how many years being so insular?

However:

ASTAC (http://www.astac.org.uk)

You don't say how long it's been since you last exercised the privileges of an ADC rating. If less than 5 years then you don't have a problem. If it's been over 5 years then you will have to sit an APC (Assessment of Prior Competency) to decide how much, if any of the course you will have to attend and pass.

If you've never held a certificate of competency in ADC though then you'll be in the 'over 5 year' position. Both of the non-NATS colleges can do these. As a guideline I know someone who renewed his ADC having not used it for over 15 years (His unit was APP only). He was given a credit for the first half of the course, only having to do the second half.

As for APP then you'll still need a rating in that even if the airfield has radar - unless you get a job at one of the few that have no requirement (Liverpool and Wattisham I know about, there may be others but not many).
