Just seen on the news this evening... sadly associated with the German disaster!... that there are currently 1800 ATCO vacancies in Europe...

... what is the true situation in the UK I wonder let alone Europe and worldwide??

At least 5000 Americans retiring in the next decade, about 600 Canadians, quite a few hundred Aussies etc etc....(and some agencies have current shortages).

It takes a few years of formal and then operational training to get an independant and effective controller.

On the upside... on fundamental economics (labour supply versus demand) there should be some good pay rises in the next few years.

On the downside...the traffic increases versus manpower decline might make the job unattractive to those in the system (burn out)and potential recruits.

Another thread has rumours of Brits leaving to greener pastures so only they could comment on their present and anticipated shortages
