I happened to be looking at the POH for an HK36 TTC Super Dimona the other day. The max AUW for the type is 770kg and this example had a basic empty weight of 589kg, which suggests that the maximum useful load (crew, fuel, baggage) is 181kg. So with a couple of typical middle-aged aviators aboard there isn't much left for fuel and baggage!

Is this typical of the breed? Or is this particular example on the heavy side?

It's all right, there isn't much room for baggage anyway. But yes, it's fairly typical. However, it doesn't use much fuel, especially if you can find a few thermals.

You still need some fuel to get off the ground in the first place though -- and with two average-sized adults you can't take very much. With two 90kg adults you can't take any fuel at all :{
