The LCC's will be jumping for joy if produced...
Maybe only usable for short flights though.

Perhaps it's for use on the A400M, for cramming in troops, as opposed to holidaymakers going on their jollies?

My read of the actual patent is that it's not for bicycle seating exactly. The problem they state is that when seat pitch is reduced, it's hard to climb over seats to the windows. The traditional solution is what they do at movie theaters: the seat pan folds up. But if the seat bottom is thick and contoured, this doesn't work.

Their solution is that the backrest rises up and forward taking the seat pan with it, so the whole thing becomes vertical.

You know, I swear I've seen something like this in a park or a bus stop and sat in it. Designed to prevent trash from being left on it when people aren't sitting on it.

The occupants would naturally be outfitted with a bicycle helmet !

Washington Post take on the patent application:

Airbus wants to patent the most uncomfortable plane seats ever

I think turning that into a 9g seat could be challenging. Given the saddle sores I've sometimes gotten after a one hour bike ride, I hope EASA/FAA laugh them out of the room :=

One of "my" MD-83 Jet Alsace has been sold to transport prisoners. Sad. Perhaps they tested these seats!!! Since Daimler-Benz (15% ? Airbus) used theirfreight waggons to Auschwitz nothing changed:{
