From this morning's RAeS mailings - the national aerospace library in Farnborough has just put its whole catalogue online.

Welcome to Heritage Online 3.5 (http://aerosociety.cirqahosting.com/)

From the society's website:-

Since the Society was formed in 1866, our library has been a treasure trove of learning and history. As the National Aerospace Library (NAL), this collection is now one of the world’s most extensive in the field of aviation, aerospace and aeronautics, offering valuable resources for a readership as varied as the Society’s membership, from pilots to PhD students, engineers to educationalists, astronauts to art lovers.

Few modern industries are as international as ours, as reflected by the Society’s growing international membership. As part of a suite of initiatives which aim to make our membership benefits more relevant to this international audience, our latest project will make the NAL accessible to all, regardless of their location. We are therefore delighted to announce the NAL catalogue is now available online, allowing its contents to be perused from any location and any time zone.

The library holdings are grouped into five major collections:

Journals – our international journal holdings form the mainstay of the collection, with over 150 current titles and a unique collection of historic editions recording the development of aviation around the world. The collection includes some foreign language publications.
Books – over 27,000 books, conference proceedings and pamphlets, including many rare books and unpublished papers. Our collection is refreshed with around 200 new books each year.
Technical reports – over 40,000 technical reports from aeronautical research establishments across the world. This collection includes reports from NASA, DLR, ONERA, ESA and their respective predecessors, to name but a few.
Regulatory material – the NAL is a depository for all publications from the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), as well as other regulatory documents, such as those of European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA).
Images, letters and manuscripts– our vast collection includes over 100,000 images, including photographs, glass lantern slides, lithographs and posters. The earliest of these dates back to the 1840’s. In addition, we house letters, diaries and notebooks from some of the earliest aeronautical pioneers, such as Sir George Cayley, the Wright brothers and Major BFS Baden-Powell. These provide a unique and fascinating insight into the evolution of flight from its inception.

The online catalogue offers quick and easy searching. Whether you require material on the Airbus A350 XWB, the removal of space debris, the F136 engine programme, Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs), boundary layer separation or the 18th century balloonist Vincenzo Lunardi, it takes just a few moments to discover what material is available.

The catalogue lists over 100,000 items held in the library and where possible includes abstracts, book reviews and links to digital content. As we develop the catalogue, more and more content will become available electronically. The National Aerospace Library is located in Farnborough and welcomes visits from members and non-members alike, Tuesday to Friday from 10.00 to 16.00. It is a reference library for the general public, though many thousands of books are available to Society members to take out on loan. For the many people for whom a visit to Farnborough is not an option, however, our expert librarians are available by telephone and email to field enquiries and assist with research.

Excellent news in my opinion.
