View Full Version : Question for B757 Pilot

Prior to t/o on a DL 757, the pilot told the pax that because of a "mechanical issue", they would leave the landing gear down for several minutes after takeoff, and he just wanted to warn everyone about the extra noise. What possible reason would there be for this action? Sure enough after two or three minutes, the gear came up and the flight was otherwise uneventful.

Roberts,

Only 2 things I know of would require this operational action.

1. wheel well fire detection system inop. Gear is left down to ensure that any possible draging brakes are nice and cool before retraction.

2. One of the brakes has been deactivated by disconnecting the brake (don't worry there are another 7) And gear is left down to ensure the wheel has stopped spinning (so there is no gyroscopic effect) prior to retraction.

Of course neither of the above compromises a/c safety.
