ATCO - PPL exemptions

Hey guys,

I'm an ATCO, I've got a current Class 2 medical and I know that I amexempt from an RT exam. Just wondering if there are any other exams that I do not have to do given my prior aviation qualifications?

Are you sure your exempt from the RT practical the coms exam ?

Under EASA rules there is no mention of any excemptions for ATCO's.

Yeah I am just wading through CAP 804 now ....

I can't see anything else that is exempt, but I know if you have a valid(current) rating at a unit then you are exempt from the Comms/RT exam.

Yup ... found it:
Holders of a valid ATCO licence issued in accordance with EU Directive
2006/23/EC are credited with the PPL communications theoretical written
examination and the 24 month examination validity period shall not apply.
Applications shall be made using Form SRG\1162 which can be downloaded from
the SRG web site: Statistics | Pilots | Personal Licences and Training (http://www.caa.co.uk/fcl/forms).

Can't find anything else that is exempt. It'll just come in handy when studying and doing the exams ... no worries :)

Ah .. it does only say exempt from the theory... is there a Practical exam too?

I'm answering my own questions here!! But for completeness I'll post em here for future searches. If you have a valid Tower and Approach rating, you are exempt from the Theory Examination for RT/Comms.

You still require a Practical - though it should be straight forward at best!

Get your pratical done by another ATCO thats an examinor.

Saves any bun fights because of differences in opinion because your RT will be real world and not what some of them are looking. Another ATCO will know where you are coming from.

Do get some real world flying in though before you do the practical! I assume you are going for your PPL.

I too have a european class 2 medical for ATCO purposes, My doctor just printed me out the PPL medical off the strength of it saving me some time and the fee (all within the same week mind) :ok:

So i should be grand!My Euro Class 2 medical was ... er ... also done the same week as my ATCO Euro class 3 ;) ... happy daze You really are friendly chaps this side of the forum!! loads of Trolls in the professional bits!!

An ATCO has always been exempt both written and practical tests for the issue of a FRTOL subject to meeting the requirements of the Exemption Certificate SRG 1162 (http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/SRG~1162FF.pdf)

There was however no exemption under JAR for the PPL Comms exam so it effectively had to be taken for that licence but not the FRTOL. CAP804 is at variance with LASORS and has missed out the Practical Test exemption. LASORS stated: Holders of a valid UK ATCO licence are credited
with the practical Communications test and
theoretical written examination. Applications
should be accompanied by form SRG\1162 which
can be downloaded from the SRG web site: http://
www.caa.co.uk/publicationdetails.asp?id=547.

Reading SRG1162 the Exemption Certificate, it refers only to LASORs not CAP804 so go for the complete exemption.

Yet another error in 804 is revealed!
