Youngest PPL?

My son turned 17 on Tuesday and had his license in his hand on Friday. Is this the youngest? He did the skills back in November, but the CAA couldn't issue the piece of paper til the date itself. They were very helpful - checked all the paperwork in December and marked his record accordingly, so it just took a phone call on tuesday to get the license printed.

In the US the examiner will give you a hand-written but otherwise completely legal and valid PPL certificate right after a successful skills test, so you can start exercising the privileges straight away. So if you do the test on your birthday, you can start exercising the privileges the same day. And there are scores of youngsters who did just that. (The printed license will arrive a few days later.)

In the UK you will never beat that due to the turnaround time of the CAA. 3 days is not bad at all, but it will never beat the FAA system.

I assume he was using the rule that you can take the skills test up to 3 months before your 17th Birthday, but cannot get the paperwork issued until your 17th Birthday.

Therefore, he is likely one of the youngest ever to pass a skills test, and I assume that the paperwork was submitted a long way before the 3 day turnaround.

Yes, he did it in November, as soon as someone pointed out that he could. Paperwork was submitted later in November, and the CAA was persuaded to check it all in December!
