If I had serious money I'd be in there. Park it in a field somewhere, set up a tent next to it; home from home. Never flew 506, but 505 appears in the log book 13th March 1969, "display rehearsal".

Don't forget the Tilley lamps and the stove!

Me the same, 505 but not 506. Think that might have been back from an overseas squadron in the 1970s, then on to 72 Sqn.

Aka compo sausages..... Yummy

Jesus, no. Did they actually taste of anything? I only remember putting half a pound of butter on two slices of bread, smothering it in brown sauce and putting the compo sausages in there as 'texture'...

Bacon, beans, compo sausage and an Egg breakfast on RAF Bruggen TACEVALs

Yummy yummy

4 tins with no doubts several sausages in for a £1, one wonders what the MOD paid for them, seem awfully cheap.

I remember the Wessex as a flying emergencies trainer. We seemed to have to cover about four or five on every trip to get through them all on the Shawbury course. First night circuit - major hydraulics failure downwind....a real one. After we'd shut down the hyd fluid dripping off the aircraft melted a pool of tarmac out of the newly re-surfaced runway and then SATCO rang the squadron to complain, stupid so and so!

Think that might have been back from an overseas squadron in the 1970s, then on to 72 Sqn. as oldbeefer says, certainly on '72 in early '71, when she first appears in my log book(s). Was not on 78 in '70-'71.

Still on 72 in Apr '73, last time on that tour. Still (or again!) on 72 on next tour - first in Nov '81 and last in Sep '83. And the old dear was still there in Jun '93 - but seemingly I didn't fly her again that tour (Tourex Oct '95) so maybe deep servicing or (unlike me :() went overseas.......

Yes, the link in post #4 shows XR506 as 18 Sqn's 'Hotel' in the late 1960s, and therefore it would have been based at Gutersloh.

Thread creep: anybody spotted (using the c/n from #4's excellent link again) that XR505 referred to earlier was sold to Uruguay and was still flying 2 years ago? It may still be operational, and certainly seems to have been the last flying Wessex. It was delivered in 1963 and was on the SRCU (Short Range Conversion Unit, pre-cursor to HOCF and so-called because it had Twin Pioneers as well as Wessex) at Odiham in '66.

First sortie on 506 May 1991, last one May 1992. Never saw it with the stretcher fit though.

It may still be operational,

Doubtful. Looking at their Base at Monevideo there is just a museum example on display at 34'50'38.80 S 56'01'13.81 W. Somebody has taken a photgraph of it so that it can been identified as a Wessex. 030 degree 1250 feet from there are four patches in front on a shiny hanger. Select history and it will be apparent that in 2011 they were Wessex hulks.

I know that Crab was there recently and showed us some pictures of them.
