Evening all,

I was scanning a few forums today and saw a similar topic posted on another forum.

Does anyone have any pictures of themselves flying/in cockpit pictures that they would like to share?

Cheers,

Blimey, you even got Betty out to see who was making all the noise, nice to see 14 in there, and 31? There used to be a sample of the 31 roundel flash painted on the wall in the ASF hangar at Bruggen where they were working out the design before the squadron formed.

Thanks for those. Lovely pics. I had the honour to serve on 27 Sqn Tornado in the late eighties and 27 Sqn Chinook a decade later. How many can say that?

I also have a huge and superb picture of a 27 Sqn Tornado flying over the Malaysian Jungle, taken in the eighties, hanging in my study. Any chance you were in that aircraft?? :ok:

It was 14 Sqn that was in charge of that whole Queens Birthday flypast. However, we used every serviceable jet at Bruggen to achieve it. I was on 14 at the time and it was bloody good fun:D:D

I was also on 31 Sqn Designate when we first formed with the Tornados at Bruggen back in 84. Before we had any jets (or aircrew) we had two rooms in ASF (one for us and one for the SEngO) where we unofficially formed the Sqn and started to cut out dayglo for the tool boards. That is why there is a painting of the original 31 Sqn flash there. The biggest problem was making sure that it was designed and fitted without painting over the side pitot probes:ok:

Gp Capt Joe Simm (then Stn Cdr) flew our first jet in and we made our initial home sharing with 20 Sqn Jags in the south west corner. That site eventually became 9 Sqn and we moved to our proper home in the North West corner; the nicest HAS site at Bruggen and fortunately very close to the Fear Dry Inn on 431 MU.:)

Srennaps,

I cannot remember you forming on 20 Sqn jags site and believe me I was one of the last, I watched the Squadron stand down parade through the fence of QRA and we remained on QRA after the Squadron had officially gone, I then moved over to 14 jags which was a far superior Jag Sqn in every way and form.. I then at the end of my tour had several weeks at 431 MU eng bay as they had a shuffle about to see the jag squadron strengths sorted until their disbandment....
First and last time I ever strayed from first line and it was dire... It taught me never get posted to a bay.... And bar those couple of weeks I never did.

I did look at your flash design...... And to be honest thought it was very stumpy and needed stretching with the tail of it redoing..... Sorry, but I did, couldn't believe it when everyone else seemed to adopt it.

BTW if you look at the 14 association website, I'm on the Gib Jag Picture, the lack of a 20 one tells you something

Nutloose,

Trust me, we did form on 20 Sqn jags. There was an Indian Jengo on one shift and a Pakistani Jengo on the other shift. Jeff Field was the WO and he transferred to us (31) along with some rigga Chief but I can’t remember his name. Also a sooty Cpl, Mick Berryman joined us, cracking lad. If I remember rightly the reason you carried on QRA, even after you disbanded, was because “we” were not ready. I also went to the 14 Sqn Jag final bash. I’m sure we must have been in the same room getting pi$$ed at some point. Great days:ok:

Pinkfin,

Wow! It is a great pic. Sadly I missed that detachment because I was posted to a Rolls Royce Project Team. To be honest I was gutted as I lived in Malaysia as a kid. I take it you remember Tojo??

Srennaps,
The Jengo was Indian, the Sengo was Pakistani or Indian and if I remember a lower caste than the Jengo that cause friction. The Jengo who was a nice guy and wore a Turban until his father died, then came in one morning sans turban with a short back and sides ( was a promise to his father to maintain it whilst he was alive )
They were great on exercise and I felt sorry for them as neither could eat Bacon and as the breakfast was beans, compo sausage, egg and Bacon with fried bread, they tended to give it away, bet their cholesterol count was better..
Jeff Fields replaced WO Robinson that if memory had a relapse and had a certificate to say he was erm sane.

Sadly I had departed before the 14 Sqn disbandment piss up, which rankles, as did missing the end of my tour on it.

Forgot to add, compo sausage.........drool

Were these part of the 21 Harvards and 17 Chipmunks shipped out to the RATG ?

They were indeed, but many more aircraft were involved.

5 FTS had 27 Chipmunks for primary training, about 60 Harvards for advanced training and 12 Ansons for navigational training. The Ansons were returned to the UK when 3 ANS at Thornhill closed at the end of September 1951.

The 27 Chipmunk T.10s allocated to 5 FTS were built at Hawarden near Chester, crated and shipped out to Durban in South Africa. At Durban the crates were transferred to rail trucks for the journey to 394 MU at RAF Heany near Bulawayo where they were assembled, flight tested and then flown up to Thornhill.

The Harvards were shipped to Ysterplaat near Cape Town, assembled by the RAF Erection Unit based there and flown up to Rhodesia by instructors from the RATG.

RAF Heany (4 FTS) - 100-miles south near Bulawayo had a similar number of aircraft, but no Ansons.

No it was the two Harvards FX373 and FX431 that collided at the Rhodes Centenary Air Rally at Salisbury in June 1953.

I can't resolve the serial number of Chipmunk G32 in the photo, it's just too small.

It's certainly JP-ish (my dislike of the aircraft has led to me trying to purge images of it from my memory). The top of the handle visible to the right of the central throttle quadrant is related to pressurisation, so it has to be a 5 or possibly a Strikemaster (I've never seen the inside of one of those). It's got a few extras than the basic military model, so I'm going for civvy JP5 (with mods to shut the CAA up) or a Strikemaster.

The yellow and black guarded switch, just above the ASI, is labelled "Pylon Stores Jettison". That probably points towards it been a Strikemaster I guess.

Hi Fishtailed,
It was nice to see a picture of Percy on PPRuNe. I wish I had a £1 for every time I have sat in the cockpit of one of those writing down Torque ITT Ng Np and fuel flow at idle. Stans in winter was the coldest, Riyadh in summer with the ECS on full hot was the hottest. Ouarzazate was the most interesting, the only flight trial I have been on where the team mutinied aginst the leader. Brough and Warton were fairly mundane in comparison. :ok:

Going one better, here is the video of my first ever attempt at AAR from the back seat of a Harrier T10, filmed by the front seater en-route to Cyprus in September 2010. It was not cleared to AAR from the front seat, due to the probe being so far behind the front seater. The difficulty with the probe being so far back is that the disturbance caused by the airframe pushes the basket away from the aircraft, requiring a fair sized lunge from a good distance back for success! That is my excuse anyway. Criticism only accepted from those that have tried it. You may want to turn your volume down unless you miss the sound of the mighty Pegasus.

From that sortie came the paragraphs in the aircrew manual regarding "flight without canopy and rear seat", which would be the result if a nervous back-seater elected to depart the aircraft with command eject set to 'rear'. Funnily enough the handling notes refer to 'high noise levels' and 'strong airflow from rear-to-front along the side consoles'.

tom3

From an older post on this very forum,

"On 27 Sep 83, the RAF lost its first Tornado. ZA 586 from IX Sqn crashed at night, some 5nm N of Kings Lynn. Memory slightly faded, but I think the aircraft went out of control following an unexplained total electrics failure. The nav ejected, but the pilot (Sqn Ldr Mike Stevens) went in with the aircraft; at the time, there was concern that he may have been unable to eject due to the airflow pinning his arms outside the cockpit (the canopy having been blown off as the nav ejected). It was decided that the only way to alleviate pilots' understandable fears over this issue was for BAe to remove the canopy from one of its aircraft and fly it minus navigator (for safety reasons), with the pilot stretching his arms into the airflow at slowly increasing airspeeds. This was done successfully, disproving the possibility that, with the loss of the canopy, the pilot would be unable to reach the ejection handle.

Keith Hartley was the pilot, and received an AFC for his efforts. Somewhere, there exists a published photo of the event."

The following is from memory so take that at face value. I think this test flight was conducted in 1988 or thereabouts. It was the last flight, I believe, of a pre production a/c and attained a speed in excess of 600 kts. Somewhere I have a video of it and he's certainly going a at a fair rate at the end.

The camera ship was a Jaguar that had difficulty keeping up with the Tornado without resorting to reheat leading to some colourful language from the Jag pilot regarding his fuel state!

regards

BBK

ps re the noise levels it was impossible for Keith Hartley to hear any R/T at the higher speeds although interestingly his transmissions were still intelligible.

22nd Nov 2012, 10:16
I remember the flight and you are right, the test flight I think was made on the P-15 prototype from Warton with KH at the controls. The objective was to see the affects from a loss of the canopy to determine if the aircraft could still be flown. It should be noted the aircraft took off without the canopy.

However, some have suggested that this was the proposed sunroof option for the GR4....

99 Change Hands
22nd Nov 2012, 11:38
Carried out due to the loss of the pilot in IX Sqn's crash as I recall. The question being whether the pilot could survive the nav's departure. Before that the doubt had been as to the nav's survival; the red line in the 700 saying the TV tabs were likely to detach and kill the nav if the canopy came off used to cause some sucking through teeth.
