Could someone please confirm the following regarding a LOC back course approach.

If the approach is selected from the FMC, the frequency for the ILS front course is auto tuned as well as the front course.
The approach can then be flown in LOC and another suitable vertical mode.

Can the same be said if you fly a LOC back course to an airfield which is not in the FMC database?
So, you would manually tune the ILS front course with the front course QDM and again fly it in LOC.

So when would you not follow the LOC command flying this kind of approach?

Thanks

A.FLOOR,
With a 777, you cannot track a back course localizer using the LOC mode of the AFDS.

You lot should be made to fly the Smith's flight system before being allowed on those pretty electric aircraft!

Talking of electric aircraft and back CRS's, a close pal left his Brit and wandered over to look at my newish 1-11. We were sitting up front when the subject of Back CRS came up. Absolutely dead-pan, I told him that since it was such a rare occurrence these days, the FD 108 couldn't do it . . . But, if it was urgent, we could press the nob hard in and release the instruments, pass them across the flight deck, and plug 'em in.

It was at that moment we were interrupted.

A year or so later I was greeted with 'You Bas:mad:!!!!!!!!!!' When he'd finished spitting nails, he gave a cringing laugh and told me what happened.

Collins flight system course, and in a quiet moment he'd told them he already knew how to do the back-beam. It was when the entire course was staring at him that he realized. He hasn't forgotten.

Seconded, our FCOM quite clearly states you fly a back course in LNAV, or TRK SEL or HDG SEL, not LOC.

From our book: "Localiser Back Course. Do not use LOC roll mode.........If the Back Course approach is not included in the FMC database, insert the ILS frequency and it's front course QDM into the NAV RAD page; the localiser pointer will then display deviation in the correct sense."
