I started my flying career in a 3-axis microlight several years ago, instructed by a gentleman famed for his down-to-earth view of aviation, and life in general. I paid for a (slightly nervous) non-flying friend to have a flying 'experience' with said instructor. After the briefing, he was strapped in, now looking more anxious. He then said to me, wide-eyed, that he was worried, as he could smell petrol..... Overhead, the instructor said 'Son, time to worry when you Stop smelling petrol'! Nearly fell over laughing!

Recently had a wannabe ATPL strapping themselves into the right hand seat who seemed a little bemused when asked to move over :O

Back in the days when I was a 737 destructor we had a line
of cells we had no other choice but to punch a hole through.
The Vturb speed is .72 from memory and instructed him to
reduce speed, check the turb speeds and epr from the book
and give me a brief (belts, ignition, cockpit/cabin prep etc).
But the 150hr trainee cadet FO said he wanted to try it at
clacker speed!

His reasoning was as follows - turbulence is bumps right? If
we compare it to a bike riding over rough potholes, its better
to ride over them at high speed and feel "jolts" rather than
slower where you'll feel every uncomfortable depression.

He added higher speed would protect us if our "angle of attract"
neared the stall. We don't want to stall in thunderstorms right?

Tickled me though. Didn't know what to write up in his Hate
Sheet other than "more study knowledge of turb penetration
required and less motorbike skill display".
